Author Security+ Price

I was just at the CompTIA web site
and looked up the price for the Security+ exam.

It said:

Non-members = $225.00 US
Corporate Member Pricing = $175.00 US

I'm in Canada and a non-member
so that means I have to pay $225.00 US
which equals roughly $330.00 Canadian.
But even $225.00 for you US folks.
A bit much don't you think?
These new CompTIA prices are killer.

I find that expensive, especially for a entry level cert that is not even
really recognized by many employers.

I don't think I am going to pay $330.00 for this cert. It's too much. I'm not rich.
I'm better off pursuing a high-end more recognized security cert by the looks of it
to get my $$$ worth.

Your dollars worth in dependent on what you wish to achieve out of the certification. I know it is hard to believe in this age of chasing certification for the sake of having letters after ones name, but it is so very true. One could do a 5 year college stint and end up with different types of letters by just turning up to lectures and being nice to the professor .... lol.
Here in New Zealand the Sec+ exam is $495 so when I take it in the next few weeks I will definitely not be taking it lightly and when achieved I will appreciate the work that went in to it. As far as high-end / vendor certifications go it really depends on what your local labour market requires. No sense in being CCNA, CCNP, CCDA/CCDP, CCIE etc if no-one uses Cisco in your area.

$495..holy crap, just for an entry level cert.

I don't even want to know
what they charge for the CISSP exam out there...

Hi,

These are all correct points of view on the price. Comptia has upped thier prices considerably from years ago when I did my A+.

But it's all perspective. Naturally, we are going to compare the exam price to the old exam price ( $100 ).

Instead compare these exam prices to what it would cost you to go to school for six years and earn a masters, and then still not make as much as " Certified " ( and with experience ) IT Pros.

$225 exam seems great when I compare it to a single course ( with materials ) at CSU. But, If I compare it to the $100 marker, it seems high. So, it is really where you draw your references from.

Also, Comptia, being the certs are considered indusrty wide as 'entry level'; the certs themselves stay with you for life. Can't say the same for Cisco; I am not knockin' em - but its nice to have a few you don't have to renew.

Peace,

Justin

So true. I look at it as an investment in my future and look at the various courses I am taking as not so much what letters I will have after my name, but what knowledge I can acquire and retain.
As a past employer with a staff of more than 100 I rarely worry about certification, but focus on the person and how they would interact with other staff and their KNOWLEDGE of their chosen profession. Amazing how putting a fully qualified chef into a new environemt and watching him create can show how little he/she knows. We all work well in our own comfort zones, but how we perform on a broader stage is the true indicator of our true selves :-)

I agree that certification costs are high. Thats why we started our site. But there is a return on investment for most certifications after you get a job. Now it's not the same as a bachelors degree....
Youre talking the cost of a 4 year degree vs. a thousand or two in certification costs. It's like comparing apples and oranges.

I am so disgruntled with CompTIA, I doubt very much I will be ponying up the money for any more of their tests.

Their administration is a joke. I've had many dealings with them & it hasn't been good. Nobody there knows what's going on.

The quality of their tests leaves much to be desired. Many of their questions are poorly worded & thier test graphics suck.

As far as an entry level certification goes, their pricing is totally out of line with the rest of the industry.

In my opinion, I think CompTIA needs to concentrate on reorganizing everything from the ground up in their organization & their tests, instead of seeing how many + certifications they can flood the market with.

IMHO - I think CompTIA certs are loosing their value with employers. They are in this region at least. The ONLY CompTIA cert that still has any value around here is A+. And that one doesn't get you very far with most HR depts.

I truely beleive CompTIA is suffering from growing pains. They took on too much too fast without a propper infrastructure or personnel in place to support it.

I'm not trying to badmouth them, just tryint to point out that there are problems & I don't see where they can justify the prices they charge for their tests.

I've dealt with CompTIA - Microsoft - Oracle - IBM & Red Hat. CompTIA comes in last for having their ducks in a row by a landslide margin. I have several friends in IT that feel this same way about CompTIA, that have had less than acceptable experiences with them.

CompTIA certs are for wealthy people.

but I let the company pay for the tests and books I need to pass the exam. If I were out of work then, yes I would let it go until I was employed. It just seems like most companies raised the price on everything under the sun, but the cost of living has stayed the same.

I'd have to agree with this also. They do seem to be overpriced. If my company wasn't paying for them I wouldn't have taken the exams. My 2 cents.

They charge US$450. Details at www.isc2.org. Better to do the SCCP instead of the S+ IMHO. S+ is not even considered to be a serious cert, same with all CompTIA certs these days.
