Study Material for Security+
|
|
|
| Hi All,
I'm new to this forum. I'm studying for the Security+, hopefully will be taking it in a couple of weeks. I've read the Mike Meyers passport cover to cover (seen mixed reviews on this forum) I've seen mention of a free tcats pdf?? What is it and where can I find it?
Thanks | |

| You can find both the freebie and the pay-to-own versions at http://www.alphageekproductions.com/.
After skimming through the freebie, I bought the pay version and it well worth the $20. I don't know if it's all the study materials you'll need for the Security+ exam. What you will speciifcally need depends upon your experience in the field of computer/network security.

| After the passport book In would certainaly recommend the $20 pdf by Tcat & Helen. I also suggest that the cost of CBT nuggets would be a good investment against the cost of the exam. | |

| Anyone have any experience with the Security+ 5 CD training series from LearnKey? I was thinking of getting it to give it a try. | |

| I haven't tried Learnkey for Security+, but personally prefer the was CBT nuggets presents the material. I think theirs is only 3 cd's though.

| Just almost through with the all-in-one book for the Security+ Exam. Some of the stuff seems good. I'll start comparing it to some other material before i give the seal of approval. I may take the test next week so just by reading the book it may only take 2 weeks to get through this cert, i hope. | |
|
| I did the learnkey one very early in the piece and found it very much lacking compared to the CBT Nuggets. | |

| Russ, are you going to retake it?
Cheers,

I've been reviewing the Security+ material from both CBT nuggets and Learnkey. I have the latest Nuggets videos (2 CDs), but not the latest LearnKey material (5 CDs). The LearnKey CDs I have are dated 2002, so they were released around the time of the Security+ exam itself. (The CDs were being discarded by their owner and I jumped at the chance to acquire them.)
I'm only part-way through viewing the material, but the differences are clear to me. The Learnkey stuff is presented in a very friendly style at about an 8th or 9th grade level. It's easy to watch and listen to, but despite the animated and enthusiastic presenter, the subject matter itself is presented at a rather slow pace, and it doen't really keep my attention for very long. The LearnKey user interface is nicely polished, and it has pre- and post-tests build in, and includes a glossary and lab assignements (with sometimes rather confusing multimedia interfaces). You can pause the presentation, but you can't rewind or fast-forward like with a video (this may be corrected in the lastest release of these CDs).
The CBT nuggets videos are just that--Microsoft ASF video files. The Nuggets viewing app is bsed on Microsoft Media Player, and its use is intuitive to anyone who views streaming media. The presentation of the material is fast and on par with a 100- to 200-level college class. There's a lot of information thrown at you in a short period of time (hence the need to occasionally pull the tracking bar back a minute or two to review sections of the material). I find the speed and delivery of the presentation, and the voice of the narrator, keeps my attention much more easily. There are no test or labs included with the videos, but such is available on the CBT nuggets web site.
The actual intellectual contect of the material seems to be good for both CBT nuggets and LearnKey, with Nuggets being a bit more on the technical side. I can see engineers and technicial-types being more attracted to the Nuggets presentation, while non-technical managers and executive-types feeling more comfortable with the LearnKey.

Yes I will retake it when I can be bothered to get around to it. Hopefully Comptia will review it and correct their mistakes sometime in the future and then I will front up with the $495 needed.
In my new job I have put more importance on learning Linux from a command line and Netware. We administer a range of servers including assorted versions of Linux and Unix (all from command line), Netware 4, 5 & 6, MS NT, W2K and 2003. Each site has its own idiosyncrasies and foibles so I have put any other studies on the backburner while I get a handle on what brings in the bucks.

As far as I know the Learnkey stuff was only released on CD early this year. I am thinking that they actually released it on VCR in 02 and have just formatted thinsg for the CDs as demand required. Of course with the VCR tape you can rewind and I think perhaps they didn't realise the importance of backtracking, or perhaps they were in too much of a rush to meet the markets demands.
A sort of agree with your review, but I do however think the CBT nuggets cover all areas in a more thoughtful and in-depth fashion. As far as quote: I can see engineers and technicial-types being more attracted to the Nuggets presentation, while non-technical managers and executive-types feeling more comfortable with the LearnKey.
I look at it this way - form and content far outweighs fashion.

I haven't gone thru all of the CDs yet, but it does look like this is true. |
