Author Hacking Exposed, how's this stack up against sec+?

It seems to cover most of what comptia thinks it put on the test, some extra stuff, maybe lacking some things, but overall looks good.
I already own this book (3rd edition) and enjoy it very much, just wondering if anybody has used it as a security+ study guide.

About to finish my mcsa this week, looking to start towards the +security part of it. Yeah, I took the long way to do it, oh well.

Also, I ordered Security+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide and Security+ Exam Cram 2 books. I don't see them mentioned much around here so after I take the test I'll let you all know what I thought of them.

I could be wrong, but by visiting this forum over the past few months it seems the books favored or mentioned by most are from Sybex, Tcat and Exam Cram all of which I'm using. I'll be finishing up my first read of the Sybex today, then on to the Tcat.

Regards.

Seems everybody is talking about the tcat pdf...Maybe I'll buy that after I'm done with the 2 books I have coming in next week.

I was scared away from sybex security+ book because of all the negative reviews on amazon.com

I'm still not sure whether I have 2 or 3 good books to study from though.

Has anybody who has taken the security+ test read hacking exposed? Any thoughts on this book?

The Sybex book isn't that bad at all - at least compared to the passport series and the Syngress books.
However, the problem with all of these is that they were written based on the Comptia objectives and to the Beta exam from last year. As the current Comptia Sec+ exam has little semblence to reality and accuracy the best study source is Tcat & Helens FULL pdf which is updated regularly and as close top the exam as possible. After a few of the other publishers fire out 2nd editions then perhaps they will be up to the mark.

The Hacking Exposed books are more likely to be overkill, as this exam will not quiz you on how to use SATAN to expose a UNIX system, how to use Trinoo to take down a network or how to implement PGP. You're more likely to be quized on what Trinoo is, who made SATAN and what encryption does PGP use.

AS is best said with a Sean Connery accent, "I'll take S words for a thousand Alex..."

Cheers,
