Hi,

I've kind of shuffled over here from the A+ side of things. A zero newbie on security.

I've got a couple of questions.

Firstly, I've been trying to find a book to study from. Everything in the link at the foot of the Security+ front page is either not available or not yet published. What's to do, just wait until they are published in Feb/March?

Secondly, I've been thinking about doing Net+, but am not really all that taken with it. However, I'm quite prepared to learn what is necessary from Net+ in order to get me going in Security+, if you see what I mean. Would this be a satisfactory way of going about things?

Thanks.

If you like to take the comptia exams, i recomend:

1rst. A+
2nd. Network+
3rd. Server+
4rth. I-net+
5fth security+

i dont have all of server+ or a+ because im interested in finishing my mcse track first.

Then ill complete the server+, security+ and A+,

I would reccomend a good level of experience with networking and the entire TCP/IP stack before attempting Security+.

It is for experienced network admins with 2 years solid networking under their belt.

It is not any easy test based on my experience with the beta.

I ha going on 4 years of experience and a butt load of certs and found it difficult.

Thanks for the two answers.

Chodan,

I imagine that you couldn't use any specific Security+ study material when you took the exam, as there doesn't seem to be any available. Do you think that having a book closely reflecting the objectives of the test would have made the test easier for you?

Just the Beta book in PDF format that TCat and authorHelen put out.
I think there is a link to it on this forum somewhere.
I also used a CISSP guide which maps to the objectives fairly well and then some.

Actually just keeping in mind Security as you work on learning networking is a very good idea. They are not really seperate topics.

The link to the free pdf can be found at

http://www.alphageekproductions.com

The final Helen and I did is out (with the test sim, etc) and we are working on finishing the instructor notes, powerpoint, etc.

And you won't need that. Just start with the free PDF. Do yourself and the rest of the planet a favor. Print and distribute to anyone who touchs a keyboard Chapter 0000. It is concepts in general.

Then for yourself, keep Chapters 0010 and 0011 handy as you study networking. These focus more on the details of network security. Chapter 0001 is a nice read but really a "can you define?" chapter.

Understanding a the theory of a switch vs. a hub is important (since they look the same). If you start with the understanding of why they are different, then you will be able to understand both traffic mangement and security at the same time. That will really give you a leg up.

Thank you for your input. This is the best information I have seen posted on Securtiy+. Perhaps you have posted before and I've just not seen it. I have your PDF and I have Security+ on my scope to attempt after
MCSA...hopefully by March. I have copied and pasted your response to notepad and will keep for future reference. Thank your for this post. Very helpful.

That sounds like a really good plan.
After MCSA you should have a good grounding in network/systems administration especially if you keep security in mind like Tcat said.

I am studying for Security + right now. We are going to be offering courses for this sometime later this year. I am studying using the material listed above, and also Course Technology just put out a training book that appears to be good quality. It has hands on exercises, etc. They are also sending me the lab guide that goes with the book as well. If you go to www.course.com and do a search on security, you will come up with this book. I have not yet taken the test, so I can't give a thumbs up or down on the book, but I will be taking it definitely in January. Element K also has some courseware, but I have emailed them several times and have yet to get a response, and we are trying to buy a bunch of course material... I dont know what the deal there is, but they are both comptia approved training materials. I will give some feedback after taking the test using all the materials I have. I think this will be a good test judging from the objectives, the material in the current study guides, and the articles that I have been reading. Also, I haven't taken any other CompTia certs except for Linux+, but I am expecting a quality test. I hope this helps!
