Questions in regards to practical for GIAC challenge

In regards to the paper that you must pass before you can sit for the GIAC exam.....
I know that it has to be 8 pages in length, single-spaced.
However, when you first start the paper, can it be on a security subject of your own choosing (similar to a thesis), or are you required to pick from a list of subjects to do your paper on?

I am assuming you are talking about the GSEC SANS cert. You can pick pretty much any topic on security that you want to write about. The following link should clear things up for you.
