Author Passed 70-217 Active Directory plus book reviews

Just passed 70-217 Active Directory with score of 980. (Passing mark
was 700.) Despite the score, this exam was a real bear. Several
correct answers were just good luck.

43 questions, non-adaptive, 150 minutes time limit. Prometric. Took
it at the New Horizons in Fairborn Ohio. Noisy construction is going
on across the street from the test center and that really didn't help.

The questions were divided into roughly:

one-fourth DNS
one-fourth RIS
one-fourth Group Policy
one-fourth everything else (sites & site links, software assign &
publish, etc.)

Be sure that you know DNS and RIS really well. Those questions were
much harder than the other questions.

I prepared for the test with:

1. Two years of real-world Windows 2000 experience.
2. Que Exam Cram 2 book "Windows 2000 Active Directory Services
Infrastructure"
3. The 70-217 chapter from the O'Reilly book "MCSE In A Nutshell"
(Windows 2000 version).
4. O'Reilly book "DNS On Windows 2000" from www.ora.com
5. Microsoft "Windows 2000 Group Policy" white paper
6. Transcender practice exams. (Didn't use the Transcender flash
cards for this test even though I had them.)

Three book reviews and a white paper review:

The Que Exam Cram 2 book "Windows 2000 Active Directory Services
Infrastructure" wasn't complete enough. It would be fine if you
wanted to be a paper MCSE, but not for the real world. Three major
flaws: It didn't have enough exercises. It explained the individual
pieces of Active Directory and Group Policy but not how they went
together. The section on DNS was way too skimpy. Buy a different
book.

The O'Reilly book "MCSE In A Nutshell" (Windows 2000 version) wasn't
very useful for this test, although it was helpful on the previous
tests. Active Directory is too complex to cover it in a few pages.
Had good info on seizing Operations Master roles but that was about
it. Still worth buying it for the W2K Pro and W2K Server tests.

The O'Reilly book "DNS On Windows 2000" really saved me on the DNS
questions. (If you don't have time to read the whole book then at
least read chapters 1,2, and 11.) It's also a useful reference for
the real world. Buy it.

If you read a normal MCSE book and still don't understand Group Policy
then read the Microsoft "Windows 2000 Group Policy" white paper.
Don't read the white paper first or it will confuse the heck out of
you! It is poorly organized and strangely phrased. But it does have
some useful info.

Congrats Rex!

Might have to checkout the O'Reilly book, sounds like a good reference.

I found a useful site on Microsoft's web page on DNS. It's Understanding and
Troubleshooting DNS in Windows 2000 (
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;en-us;330511 ).

Though it's a 156MB download (iso image), it provides 3 hours and 50 minutes
of training.

Thanks for the link, I've downloaded the ISO and burnt it but haven't had
the time to look at it yet. Do you think that it will be useful for 70-215?
or might it be too much information for this exam?

What version of Windows Media Player are you using?

I found if one is using WMP 9.0, the program doesn't work correctly. Using
WMP 7.1, the program works as it should.

Can you tell me how you got it to work, I figure out how to play videos
but it is strictly videos with no exhibits or slides to accompany the
video
