Win2k Server Procedure Problems.

| Hello,
I'm just studying for my MCSE, and I'm going through the procedures in
Chapter 3 of Win2k Server. In the book, on upgrading, it says (in Procedure
3) "I must have a 32 bit operating system installed like Windows 95 or
Windows NT.". Not having win95, I installed Windows 98 on the target
computer. when I ran the "Check Upgrades Only", I got a message that said I
can't install on Windows 98, that I must upgrade to Windows 2000". This is
the thing that is frustrating me, it seems all thoughout this book, there
are items that say "Do this" only to find I can't do it. Is there a
difference between Win 95 and Win 98 that allows server to be installed on
95 and not 98?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If you resond to this post, please

Thanks for the answer. I'm reading the Windows 2000 Server book from
Microsoft Press. The statement I'm reading is on page 116 "Procedure 3:
Running an unattended setup of Windows 2000 Server from Computer2". The
line reads, "Computer 2 must be running a 32 bit operating system, such as
Windows 95 or Windows NT.". This is one of the reasons why reading
Microsoft Press is so frustrating for me. I read in the Windows 2000 Pro
book, the first paragraph on Multiple Displays says "WIndows 2000 supports
extending your disply across a maximum of 9 monitors" yet in the bullet
points below the diagram, the first bullet says "a maximum of 10 monitors".
Drivin' me nuts! Anyway, I'm just wondering if I should bail on these MS
Press books and find a set of Sybex books to use.

page 118 Caution.

Windows client operating systems can't be upgraded to server operating
systems and vice-versa.

Windows 98 does not support NTFS.

| After I typed that, I remembered that Win9x doesn't support NTFS.
So, why does the book say to convert it to NTFS? Another mistake?
"Caution If you are upgrading from Windows 9x, check to see if your
partition is NTFS. If not, you will need to convert it. You can do this by
typing convert c: /fs:ntfs at the command prompt."
To upgrade an operating system, it has to be Windows NT Server 3.51, Windows
NT Server 4.0 Server or Windows NT Server 4.0 Terminal Server. You can also
upgrade versions prior to Windows NT Server 3.51, but you must first upgrade
to Windows NT Server 3.51 or 4.0.

| The statement references using winnt32 vs. winnt.
Winnt32 is the 32 bit installer, and you need a 32 bit OS to run it.
winnt is what you run from the command prompt.
You can not "upgrade" Windows 98 to Windows 2000 Server, but you can
install "dual-boot."
To run the Check Upgrades Only option, you need an OS that a valid
upgrade can be performed from. In the case of Windows 2000 Server, you
need Windows NT 3.5.1 Server or Windows NT 4 Server.

There is no reason to convert the file system to NTFS prior to upgrading.

| if you want to do a unattended inststall
rename unattended.tx to winnt.sif
and copy it to a floppy disk
put win server cd in reboot (boot from cd)
you dont need any operating system

That's not exactly true Andy, but I had to upgrade to Win2k pro before
upgrading to Win2k Server
