| Hey,
Since the 7th of July I have applied for 142 jobs on the
www.seek.com.au website and have only recieved 1 interview.
The problem ( I believe I'm having ) is that I exited the I.T industry
in mid 2001 due to illness and was out of the work force for over a
year, attempted to get back into the I.T industry but had no luck and
have done casual store work and telemaketing work since then.
My experience pre2001 was in highly regarded positions. ie
Administrator of telstra.com (largest telco in Asutralia ), webmaster
of bigpond business (part of telstra ), hostmaster of sydney telstra
dns, support for Optus ( another large telco in Australia ), contract
work with Compaq and defence force, ran an I.SP, and other smaller
jobs such as computer reseller etc.
The jobs I'm applying for are equal to the positions I held earlier
and range down to simple helpdesk positions.
I'm not receiving any call backs from any agencies.
I do not know what is going on =/
I'm going for my 70-210 in 2 weeks in a hope that i will have greater
hopes in securing a job. I have a baby on the way in 6 months and need
employment (I'm currently unemplyed and on benefits, however, the
benefits are no where nearly enough to bring forward the life I wish
for my child ).
What do I do ? Do I put my efforts into achieving the certificates and
show that even though i have been out of the I.T industry since 2001
that I still do have the skills and also the capability to self learn
win2000 ( ex NT admin ). Or do I toss in all of my previous experience
( greatly I.T based ) and apply for something that can be found in the
local paper ie brickies labourer job ( although I have done this and
they were scared off by my I.T based resume ).
I would love to get back into the I.T industry, not for the large
amounts of money which is merely just stories of pre2000 employment,
but because it's something that continues to grow in new technologies
which gives me variance in my life, and can be challenging at times
which can give my brain something complex to figure out and the
satisfaction I solved a problem (plus my resume is heavily I.T).
I do not have the option of doing a computer degree because i will not
be able to find funds to support the child whilst doing studies.
I'm completely stuck. Please Help !!
Thank you.

Please visit alt.computer.consultants and you will find plenty of
reasons of why you are not getting any interviews. People are not
being hired; they are being laid off and the jobs are going overseas
as fast as it can be done. It is not only IT but a wide range of
white collar work that is leaving America, England, and your country.
Many people feel further education is the answer. Not really, as it
is not going to help if there is nobody that will hire you.
Of course, not every job can be sent overseas. So if you do get every
cert out there and have experience and are willing to work for less
than you used to make in 2001, you should be able to get a position.
If you want someone to cheer you up just call your local MCSE
training school and they'll tell you what a wonderful job market
awaits you if you up your certification. Others who make money of the
MCSE will do the same.

2001 was a bad year. if you didn't leave due to illness, you would've been
laid off.
unfortunately, things haven't changed for the better. as most people here
agree, IT is a surplus commodity better suited overseas (outsourced). i have
many doubts that spending your money for MCSE training will yield a (better)
job.
getting old isn't so bad. but, getting old and changing career path really
sux.

| Shane,
Get some one-way tickets and move your family offshore to Mumbai.
There are more than enough jobs available as Western companies cannot
calm their insatiable appetites for the regions IT/IS workers fast
enough. It might take some getting used to from docile Australia, but
you'll adapt. July marks the start of the monsoon season there so act
quickly. I bet two shakes of a lamb's tail that anywhere you go in
the city you shouldn't be within 500 yards of a UN relief agency
handing out infant formula to the locals.
You should consider yourself lucky that you at least had the
opportunity to interview with a company in the past three months. One
resume hit in 142 is pretty good for IT/IS.

| I am moving from The Netherlands to Australia, Sydney to be precise, in a
few months to be with my girlfriend who is Australian.
I have contacted several recruitment agencies to ask how the market is for
ppl like me
(MCSE NT and three exams away from MCSE 2000, 5 years experience working for
the Ministry of Defence on their Royal Airforce WAN, I am 26 years of age.
The replies I got from the agencies were reasonably positive. They told me
that the market was picking up and that my chances of finding a decent job
in my field are ok.
Now that I read this posting I am VERY VERY worried....
It cant be that bad? right?.....
