Windows Rebooting Constantly

I have tried to installed a Win2k on a P11 with 266MHZ
new Ide hard drive 40 GB
128 MB RAM
I get errors copying Windows files, I then take the drive to another PC and
I successfully installed the Windows.
Back to the P11 PC mount the hard drive, after displaying the text starting
Windows just before it starts the GUI the PC will power down and reboots.
I have swap the power supply and tried with a functioning one from another
PC I keep getting the same problem
I have swap the Video card and tried with a functioning one from another PC
I keep getting the same problem
Reduced the ram to 64 MB keep getting the same problem.
Do anyone have any idea of what the problem might be what step do I need to
take next.
Thanks in advance

How different is the hardware (motherboard, graphics adapter, CPU) of
these two PCs?

Most likely it's a duff driver. Does it start in 'Safe Mode ?'

I had this problem when I installed a new motherboard. Basically
windows is trying to load drivers for the old motherboard causing the
problem.
I ultimately had to reinstall to correct the problem. One suggestion
would be to format the HD and then copy the CD to it (while in the PC
that works.) Put in the machine you want to use it in and do the
installation from the HD.
You may also find some helpful info at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tr...rt2/proch06.asp
specifically in the Windows 2000 Professional Startup Process
section.

There you have your answer. Different HAL, won't work.

Could be hardware still. Check the capacitors on the motherboard for
bulges, splits or gunk leaking out. I don't know what make/model of
motherboard you are using but for info the motherboard manufacturer Abit had
quite a problem with capacitors on a range of motherboards going down a
couple of years ago (the effects are still being felt by users). The
results of this in most cases was initial instabilities such as random
re-booting followed by a worsening of the symptoms until finally the PC
wouldn't boot. If you do have dodgy caps, it is a fairly straightforward
if somewhat time consuming job to replace them provided you are handy with a
soldering iron, know something about circuits and can source the parts
(getting the same value and voltage capacitors is not usually too difficult
but ensuring they are of a similar physical size can be problematic)

| First: is the BIOS up to date on this PC..? Some P II PC's required a BIOS
update bofore they would work with W2K..
Second: unless the PC you take your hard drive to (to pre-load W2K) matches
this PC's hardware exactly, I could see how this problem could occur....
incompatible drivers loaded, during install, for this PC
Third: have you tried to install the O/S on this PC from scratch? If so..
what happened?

| One other thing you might want to try that I didn't see anyone else state.
That is swap out the memory modules, you may have a bum stick that is
causeing this issue. I have had this happen to me 2x already on two
different machines. After I finally figured out the problem the first time,
it was easier to reconize the second time it happened to me. Incidentally,
my experience had occured on two different machines runnig different OS's,
(W2KAdvanced Server, and XP Pro). and different Memory Manufacuteres, hence
there was no common relations between the two episodes of device error.
Hope it helps.
