The director of company XYZ has phoned up and complained that he is unable
to download track information when he inserts a CD on his Windows 2000
machine. He says he gets the the error message 'The album was not found on
the Internet'.

He says that the CDs are top selling CDs (eg Abba greatest hits or Mike
Oldfield Tubler Bells) so can not understand why he gets the error. He also
reminds you that he approved the funding (as he is the MD) of migratring to
Windows 2000, therefore this problem beter be sorted out, or the Windows
2003 upgrade will not happen.

Answers anyone?

Do you have a proxy server or something that would block the access to
the site or ports that are needed to download that information?

Does it work for anyone on the network?

heh heh heh - Tell him that as it is not business related that it is not a
priority issue ;-)

Seriously though, on a business network this is quite often a firewall issue
and the port that the media player uses is blocked therefore denying access
to to relevent site.

Take the CD home and try it there to make sure it works. If so, the follow
the other advice and check over the firewall/proxy settings.

The issue, you should explain to him, is not Windows related it is IE -
internet Explorer related. Most likely, a setting in IE internet security is
not allowing activex, or some other macros to run on his local drive. This
may be a result of a policy setting, if you are running IEAK controls, it
maybe a change included with athe latest security patch download or the user
may have effected the change himself. The net result, if it isn't a policy,
is to relax the internet security setting, either permenently or just long
enough to make the update.

Hi All

Thanks for the advice. I will do some testing along these lines. There is
both a firewall and the machine (W2K) has been updated with SP3.

Oh some useful links you may or may not know about.

There is a new version of VNC. For those of you who do not know the
program, it gives you remote control of PCs over a LAN. For those of you
familiar with it I have found it a bit quicker than previous versions. (we
even use this at work to help with PC support)
www.realvnc.com

I have found this ZIP program useful. As its free it has helped in stopping
evaluation versions of WinZip.
http://zipcentral.iscool.net/

I have found no real problems with the programs above, but if you know of
any please let me know if there is any serious problems. Failing that I
hope they are of use.

Kind Regards
Chris

More then likely, it is proxy server. If it is microsoft proxy, install the
proxy client and that will fix it. Then proceed to tell your boss he is a
big cry baby and to quit his bitching.

SELECT THE MOST APPROPRIATE ANSWER:

A) Lie that the feature is only supported in Windows 2003 and ask him
where his cheque book is?
B) Plug the NIC in.
C) Tell him that you have disabled the ability of media player to
send information over the internet because the RIAA are watching him.
D) Check the proxy settings.
