Author MCSE's cannot do simple tasks !!
The Oracle

2003-06-27, 11:25 am

Hello,
We no longer believe in MCSE and offered a job to a guy with no
qualifications over several MCSE's. Why? We set up a test where we back to
backed two PC's (one a server) and the candidate had to transfer files
between the two. They also had to create several accounts and set up a DHCP
scope.

NOT ONE of the MCSE's could get this working properly. It took me ten
minutes (and I am a networking guy). The successful candidate did it in
about five minutes.

Sorry to all you honest MCSE's but the large majority of the holders of this
qualification are totally useless. No wonder it has plummeted in it appeal
to employers. We now just advertise for expereinced people and make no
mention of the MCSE.
Useless !!!! Get you act together Microsoft !!!

I'm only MCP. If that's all it takes to get a well paid job - Show me the
money!!!!

Ur own fault then - how stupid is it to hire a guy with certifications only, and no experience?

Takes 2...

I'm not even an MCP and I can do that.....shouldn't that be basic knowledge
for someone in the computer networking profession???

randomme

I'm not even certified ( but do have a degree), but I can do that in less
than 10 minutes.
But why am I still not employed then? Everytime I went to job interviews,
they'd ask if I would be interested to be MCSE certified/Cisco certified,
etc. Which is why i'm pursuing to get my mcse now.
Are you saying that this will not be worth it at all?

No. If u have experience AND a MCSE you WILL get a job . . .

Hey dood - If you are so unbelieving of MCSE, why don't you just toddle off
to an Oracle group and play witth the other kiddies there. This is a group
for people to talk about Microsoft certifications and various related
subjects. Your continual posting spouting your expertise and putting down
MCSE tends to make me think that perhaps YOU couldn't do the job and a MCSE
showed you up, leaving you very embarrassed and now looking for some kind of
solution .... in other words - suck it in and take it like a man ;-)

First and foremost - NO certification or degree is an indication that a
person is competent in a real world situation - just proff that the person
managed to read and absorb enough material to take a test. Consider it
just like a drivers licence .... lets you play with big dangerous motor
cars, but does not actually prove that you knwo what you are doing. IMHO
about 20-30% of the drivers out there should not be allowed on the roads -
possibly a similar number for MCSE or any other certification.

Very unbelieving of MCSE and I wouldn't stoop so low as to to bother getting
it since it's worthless. I don't bad mouth the Microsoft products at all -
just the certs. And to answer the other guy here, we do NOT base our
judgement on a few brain dumped tests either.

Market forces guys - useless qualifications'll get you nowehere since the
market doesn't want you anymore - it wants experience and most holders of
this cert don't have any. Period. You know it's the truth.

Lighten up Francis..... or,
Always with the negative waves, Moriarity....

Anyway, who in their right mind would hire someone without checking
references and verifying experience? So what if YOU had an MCSE come in not
knowing how to do things. I've seen people with other certs, including
Oracle, who had similar problems on skills tests. The trick here, and this
is the hard part, is to have EXPERIENCE. The certs only validate your
experience and can set you apart from the rest. Again, if you had checked
out their resume and actually talked to supervisors they worked for then I
can't see how you would have ended up with situation in the first place.
Here's your sign.....

But of course the problem with the company that "The Oracle" works at is
that they were offering peanuts in the way of salary so all the real MCSEs
stayed away leaving only the braindumpers.

Kewl...Jus' what I need on a hot day...a RANT...You're working under the
assumption that the world is fair and owes you a living...Hey, get a clue,
Mister Gates and Microsoft didn't get rich by being HONEST...It's not in
their vocabulary or corporate dictionaries...Ask Misters Nukem or
Ballmer...They don't care what you think as long as you keep sending them
M-O-N-E-Y...

Besides even Microsoft is sending their tech (MCSE) jobs to India! MSCE's
are cheaper and less likely to XXXXX in India then their US counterparts...

Have a kewl day,
Arous

From what I can figure out so far, being a CCIE is about like being the
valedictorian of summer school. To get a CCNA (from what I understand) you
have to take a 40 hour class - usually administered boot camp style, crammed
in to a week long format- where you get to play around with a switch and a
router. Then take a test which is about on the level of Network+. The CCNP
is more rigorous - 4 mores courses - going into far more depth on
networking, routing, switching etc. Coursework given in about the same
manner as before, with tests for each. At the end of which time you have
maybe the equivalent of one semester in a good engineering program. Without
the math, physics, computer programming of course. Now I honestly do not know
what all extra study, experience, and testing goes into the CCIE beyond the
aforementioned - but lets assume that it was three times the total learning
I just calculated. You now have the equivalent of 2 yrs. of college (a
really good junior college lets say). I would love to have Cisco training
myself, because it is hard-core networking - and I know that they make world
class products - but I just don't quite get the unwarranted self- importance
of some people who happen to have attained a certain level of expertise.

In that case my learned colleague - show some humility and try to be nice to
those who do not have your understanding of a particular subject. Me - I'm
either in the $h!t or just about to step in it, but some of those people who
you sumarily dismiss and fire caustic remarks at can be rather bright - they
just have problems with a certain area or concept.

In other words - if all you can do is vent or abuse someone, then try to
keep your remarks/comments to yourself.

Do you look at the posts that I flame? Its people who are not looking for
clarification its those that want to cheat or be spoon-fed because they are
too lazy to look for anything. My responses to valid questions I will agree
are sort of cross and I can work on that but cheaters and lazy SOBs are
flame bait end of story.

Techie - I see that you have A+, Network+, MCP - How are you doing with
these? In other words, do you find job prospects, career advancement, etc.
to be OK with your current creds. I'm looking at going for some of these
myself and wonder what the heck is up with IT, tech jobs in general these
days. And what's your take on degree vs. certs? It seems that most of the IT
want ads I see nowadays don't really mention them very much - usually want
BS in CS, math , eng. etc. with strong emphasis on the usual suspects
(C++,VB,scripting languages, strong dBase background ) with experience being
the obvious ringer.

If you are looking at doing A+, Network + you will learn nothing about C++,
VB, scripting languages or dBase. Depending on which MCP(s) you are looking
to do, you will learn nothing about these either. MCSE track does not
usually cover any of these. MCSD can cover VB, C++ or C#.

I guess it depends on the job market where you are, as soon as I got my
certs the phone started ringing for jobs but remember you need experience as
well.

Yeah I wish. I have a stable job, but I'm wanting to move to the
dallas area. Every single job listing asks for an MCSE. I have great
knowledge, and I've been in this business for 10 years. But I don't
have an MCSE stamp on my resume, and I have yet to get acknowledged.
So don't whine to me about not wanting certs anymore. The market
demands them right now, it's sucking those certs up like no tomorrow
and leaving the experience people in the dust. So here I sit, getting
ready to pay some bucks to pass a bunch of exam tests.

Yeah dont feel bad... it totally depends on the Area.. i'm working in Kuwait for the last 7 years, worked hard 2 earn these certification & its almost 1 year, but i'm still looking for a job totally related to my feild. So having MCSE CCNA, A+ etc stamped on ur resume will not gurantee that u'll get a job .. dont give up keep trying

yes, the certs AND experience are very important. an mcse with quality
experience and good refs is a strong cxandidate for any win type job.

the ace in the hole is .... the resume (incredibly, people spend little time
on it, despite it being the REAL first handshake).
