Author Free or low cost MCSE / MCSA training...

Hello,

I am looking to get my MCSE or MCSA (haven't decidede on which one)
certification for my résumé. I DEFINITELY do not want to spend $6000+
getting this certification. Does anyone anywhere have any
recommendations as to which free (or low cost) web sites offer the
best training for these certifications?

I know some people see MCP training as a money-grab and a general
waste of time. However, the reality still remains that many companies
are hiring people with this kind of certification and are requesting
it in their job postings. I am in Technical Support trying to work my
way into software development.

Comments or recommendations are welcome.

My MCSE cost only the price for the exams for the rest I just play with the
software and download all the info I can find on websites....

Howdy,

If you are going for software development the MCSE is a start (don't bother
with MCSA - does not cover design issues), but definitely read a lot more
than just networking and sys admin. I am in a similar situation as you,
with certs and experience primarily in sys admin and networking. But I am
starting to dig into programming myself (Perl, C++), databases, higher math
beyond calculus. Kind of need some self-motivation to get up at dawn and
sit down at dusk to do some reading.

I did all my certifications (and am doing more certifications) by
self-studying and getting the right hands-on experience. No classes here.
Books plus playing with the software will get you there. I have listened to
senior admin folks telling me that courses are a waste of time, especially
if the instructor is reading straight out of a book (as it was in at least
one case).

Plus if you are going into software development, certifications are perhaps
even less emphasized than actual skillset and experience. In that, courses
won't get you very far apart from being a good (or even a decent) primer.
But get your hands dirty in doing a few projects and test your skills, and
be sure your manager know about it (when the projects go well). He/she
might just say something like, "You know C++/Perl/Java? Good. We actually
need some help over at QA or dev, why don't you talk to Bob in getting a few
more things done for us..." You never know.

Good luck,

Simon

That is my plan also.... to self teach myself and just
take the test.

Question tho..... where does one go to take the tests
and what do the tests cost?

Now THAT is the kind of thing that makes USENET and the Internet
useful!!

Thanks for the feedback!

P.S. I am not sure why my original post went up twice. Maybe it's a
glitch with Google.
