Hi,

I have the following setup and can't seem to get it to work, anyone got any
ideas?

I have one desktop with two NIC's, and one laptop with a wireless NIC. In
the desktop i have a CAT5 cable providing me internet access from my office.
From this CAT5 cable i get assigned 5 public static IP's which i need to use
to connect to the internet, i can't use any other IP to get on to the net.
So, this cable goes into one of my NIC's, in the other i have a Netgear
ME102 (wireless access point) which i am using for the laptop to connect to.

Setup:
NB: I have used example IP's

Range of IP's availble: 194.194.194.2 - 194.194.194.6
Gateway to net: 194.194.194.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.248

Nic 1 (Cat5 to internet)
IP: 194.194.194.2
Subnet 255.255.255.248
Gateway 194.194.194.1

Nic 2 (ME102)
IP: 194.194.194.3
Subnet 255.255.255.248
Gateway: Blank

ME102
IP: 194.194.194.4
Subnet: 255.255.255.248
Gateway: 194.194.194.1

Laptop NIC
IP: 194.194.194.4
Subnet: 255.255.255.248
Gateway: 194.194.194.2

Okay, well in the above setup, my desktop can get online, but from each side
i can only ping as far as the ME102, and the laptop can not get online.
However, if i change to the below setup, and use to different subnets on
both NIC's i can ping all over the network, but i can't get online because
of using private IP's.

Nic 1 (Cat5 to internet)
IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 194.194.194.1

Nic 2 (ME102)
IP: 192.168.1.4
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway: Blank

ME102
IP: 192.168.0.4
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 194.194.194.1

Laptop NIC
IP: 192.168.1.3
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.2

So, from what i understand, because my public ip range is all on the same
subnet, i am going to need some sort of proxy software??? Is this correct,
or am i totally missing the point. If i need some proxy - what should i use,
and how do i set it up?

Thanks in advance,

Denis Cooper

I have not messed with wireless very much, but this
might be worth a shot:

Nic 1 (Cat5 to internet)
IP: 194.194.194.2
Subnet 255.255.255.248
Gateway 194.194.194.1

Nic 2 (ME102)
IP: 194.194.194.3
Subnet 255.255.255.248
Gateway: 194.194.194.1

ME102
IP: 194.194.194.4
Subnet: 255.255.255.248
Gateway: 194.194.194.1

Laptop NIC
IP: 194.194.194.5
Subnet: 255.255.255.248
Gateway: 194.194.194.1

Thanks,

this is something that i have already tried - again the cards don't see each
other as they are on the same subnet.

I can't see how this could work... considering the ME102 and the Laptop NIC
have the same IP address.....

I can't see how this would work either... using addresses that are out of
the range of the subnets....
Try this....

Nic 1 (Cat5 to internet)
IP: 194.194.194.2
Subnet 255.255.255.248
Gateway 194.194.194.1

Nic 2 (ME102)
IP: 194.194.194.3
Subnet 255.255.255.248
Gateway: 194.194.194.2

ME102
IP: 194.194.194.4
Subnet: 255.255.255.248
Gateway: 194.194.194.3 (I assume that this is the physical connection
between this device, and Nic 2)

Laptop NIC
IP: 194.194.194.5
Subnet: 255.255.255.248
Gateway: 194.194.194.4

Some kind of routing may be needed between Nic 1 and Nic 2. Also, what is
the IP address of the DNS server? Make sure you put that address in the
networking info on both your PC and your Laptop....

I can't see how this would work... The ME102 and the Laptop NIC have the
same IP Address....
Plus, the NIC 2 doesn't have a gateway address...

I can't see how this would work either.... the Gateways for some of these IP
Addresses are out of range for the subnets given...

If I were you, I'd go buy an inexpensive hub... connect Nic1, Nic2 and the
ME102 to it... And try the addreses as follows...

Internet to port on Hub...

Nic 1 (Cat5 to Hub)
IP: 194.194.194.2
Subnet 255.255.255.248
Gateway 194.194.194.1

Nic 2 (Cat 5 to Hub)
IP: 194.194.194.3
Subnet 255.255.255.248
Gateway: 194.194.194.2

ME102 (Cat 5 to Hub)
IP: 194.194.194.4
Subnet: 255.255.255.248
Gateway: 194.194.194.2

Laptop NIC
IP: 194.194.194.5
Subnet: 255.255.255.248
Gateway: 194.194.194.2

Nic 2 may need to be set up with some routing... but this should allow the
Desktop and the Laptop access to the internet... while also being able to
see each other... Also.. what is the DNS server IP address..? You need to
put that into the networking info for both your Desktop and laptop PC's...

If you have Windows XP netgears wireless NIC exploits a security hole in XP
in order to work. If you have your XP machine properly updated with windows
update then it closes the security hole. This allows you to connect to the
desktop but you cannot access the internet at all. Buy a new Wireless NIC
and it should work fine. Netgear shoudl reimburse you if you complain.

Dennis, do you *know* that both network cards and both cables are
good? Don't assume.

what are you using for a gateway

I know, is that a problem?
the way i do it i only use one public (internet) ip
do you have to use all 5 static ip`s ?

You know what, I don't think that I was awake yet when
I answered your post. What you have is a pretty normal
setup. At the time, I thought that I was being
helpful, but now I don't know what I was going for.
Sorry about that.

Do you have internet connectin sharing on on the laptop?

If you use it, it will assign the address of, (i believe, been a while since
I did this) 192.168.0.1 to your second nic card.

Then put your laptop on 192.168.0 subnet with C Mask, and 192.168.0.1 as
gateway. Should work like a charm.
