Author Share on a folder over the internet?
Ammar

2003-07-04, 8:50 am

Hi all,

I'm wondering how could I give a share of folder in my computer with someone
over the internet so he could view its contents just like it's in his
computer.

Thanks,
Ammar

Make a password protected folder on your web server space and give your
friend the Username and Password.
I would have thought that opening a server service on your own computer
would be like advertising to the world that you have an open port, not a
great idea.

Well if you're a newbie and you get advice, use it.
Paul already answered your question.

What you propose to do is probably best described as lunacy. Unless you are
setting up some very serious encryption and authentication I would suggest
something a lot safer. User & password are a start, but I would think I
could enter your system fairly quick as soon as you share it.
My suggestion would to be something like a yahoo briefcase and putting any
files you want to share there. Either that or try

A silly answer to an even more silly question.

This isn't alt.security.tips.for.idiots.
Windows 98 also prompts you for a username and password.

You were given good advice. Don't waste other people's time
by questioning their judgement if you were the one that came here
for advice in the first place.

I suggest you do a little research of your own on the subject to get
better idea of what's really going on inside that strange box that makes
all your pretty ladies appear on your screen.

This converstaion is over.... *g*

Please don't waste your precious time answering my silly question. It's not
a shame to ask and I didn't ask you to answer me. This newsgroup is full of
experts and good people who are not arrogant and ready to give advice.

Ammar, i dont see why you dont understand Paul's advice on your question!!
it is very simple, you open your port to the world.. then you know what is
going to happen!! if you dont then certainly this is not the right NG for
you.. i highly suggest you to try alt.windows.security..

these days, you should learn to appreciate the time people spending on
reading your comments, trying to make sense and replying to your post!!

sometimes it's not what is said - it's the way it is said.
different people take it differently.

Ammar,

The answer is yes you can share a folder over the Internet, your private
IP network can be opened to the public IP network if you wish. Since
you did not ask about security I will tell you your crazy or what have
you. No web server is needed to share on the Internet. How do you
think services like Kazaa and Napster work? Same shit.

OK, then what about sharing a folder over the Internet with a firewall
installed on my PC ?

Thanks

Smoi,

For sure I appreciate the time you spent on reading my comments, but I don't
like people who read my comments and laugh at them (not you ) then leave
me with no answers. It's not a shame to ask, all of you didn't know anything
about all these stuff someday and you learned. It's not a good idea trying
to frustrate other people while they are trying to advance and collect
knowledge. I don't like selfish people who think they are the best. Nobody
came to this life and knew everything from his birthday.

Thanks again
Ammar

There is no such thing as a stupid question.
There are only stupid people.
