Author Q. for the experts here. Removing NT4 DC

We have a network with half a dozen domain controllers which are a mixture
of 4*2k and 2*NT4.
Because of the way the network has been expanded in the past we have more
than we need and I'm trying to simplify things ideally ending up with just
three 2k DCs.

Its easy enough to run DCPROMO on one or two of the 2k boxes , and one of
the NT machines is being replaced with a 2k server so that solves some of
the problems.
The trouble is I'm left with one NT4 machine that I don't really want as a
DC.

As I see it my options are

1) leave it as it stands and end up with 2*2k and 1*NT4 domain controllers.
2) backup everything on the server and reinstall NT4 as a standalone server.
3) upgrade this server to 2k which then allows me to DCPROMO as needed.
4) use a third party utility such as this
http://utools.com/UTools/UPromote_faq.asp which claims to be able to convert
NT4 back to a standalone server.

Obviously 1 is easiest , 2 will be a pain as a lot of stuff lives on that
server , 3 has licence costs and 4 is potentially risky.

Anything else you can suggest or points I might have missed?

5) backup everything on the server before using a third party utility such
as UPromote.

It gets a full backup daily anyway , so at worst I'd always be able to go
back to where I started if I tried that route.

Just out of curiousity, what are the clients, and is there a need for a NT4
Server?
Windows 2000 has a PDC emulator anyways.
Why on earth would you want an NT4 machine around anyways? Upgrading will
bring down your TCO

All 2k and xp clients apart from a few 98 laptops.
AFAIK there are no apps installed that *must* run on an NT machine but the
network was all originally NT servers and this is going to be the last one
left standing as a DC which is why I want to kill it off.
I'm new at this company and am trying to rationalise the network.

Then just kill it off. If it's just playing the role of the old PDC, then
you have nothing to really worry about. I would however make sure that the
replication stops to that PDC though in your ADS
