| I am having trouble getting a Win 98 machine and Win 2K Pro machine to see
one another in a workgroup.
I have TCP / IP installed and they will ping themselves but not one another.
They are connected by a cross over cable. Lights on the cards are on.
File and Print sharing is turn on.
Thanks in advance!

| I used 192.168.1.1 for one machine and 192.168.1.2 for the second.
Subnet 255.255.255.0 for both.

| Did u check using ipconfig? Maybe the 2000 Pro has gone nuts and gone to
169.254.x.y address. If u have checked both using ipconfig and both are
registering correct addresses and subnets, maybe try a different cross
cable.

| I thought about the cable because I could Ping the IP of each maching but
not the other.
I have lights on the back of the cards indicating a connection though.
Any further thoughts?

| Actually, no harm in trying out another cross cable if u have another. Or
else try removing the tcp/ip and reinstall it. See if that works. And also,
I have seen elsewhere, others have suggested that u check to make sure both
computers have Clients for Microsoft Networks installed.

| Are u certain that cable is a cross cable?

| Just a note, to use most any Win9x client (excluding ME) with Win2k in a small PTP network you must install NetBEUI on both machines. Typically the 9x client cannot see or access the NTFS system without this installed.
ME has capability for accessing NTFS partitions and thus has no need for additional network configuring.
Leave the cable be, try this. Should work after that change and a reboot.
Hope that helps | |

What? That's not true. You will be able access files on NTFS partitions on
a networked computer from other computers on the network running MS-DOS and
ALL versions of Windows and even other operating systems capable of Windows
networking, as well. The restrictions you speak of are only applicable on
the local computer, not over the network.
If properly configured, TCP/IP is the only protocol needed in this case.

Please post the output of ipconfig /all from each computer. Thanks.
