Many thanks for all the replies which I have followed. I reinstalled DUN, to
no avail... then Windows 98 with a different copy, and this was a reformat
reinstall aswell, and I used the typical settings.
The problem still existed so I tried different modems, internal software
modems and trying them in different slots. Still have the problem. The
modems definitely work in my other pC with the same windows installed so
this leads me to think hardware and motherboard at that. By the way I tried
the olitech modem on my pc (windows XP pro) and the fault was the same on
that... it even fails to detect the dial tone. I can confirm the settings
were the same on my working pc asthe problem one!
What i do know is even when the modem is dialling the dial tone is still
evident on the telephone!
Now i am stumped well and truly!! Am i right in thinking motherboard??? All
cables have been swapped.
FYI the pc is a packard bell P233 ... quite old i know!!
Any ideas very much appreciated

No you're wrong. It's the modem. It's not detecting a dialtone and just
blind dialling.

The external modem has had its serial lead swapped, and I have swapped the
leads from the modem to the wall too. I have even connected to another wall
socket! If I unplug the leads from the modem into a phone I can hear the
dial tone!!

I hear what you are saying ... but this could not be the case on all the
modems I have tried surely?
I was just wondering whether any components of the PB machine are
conflicting?

Ah, I didn't notice that you already said you'd already swapped all leads.
So no modem works in this PC, but all of your modems work in other PCs?

The original External Modem (Olitech 2000) fails in any PC (now tried with
3..2 with 98 1 with XP...coincidence??). All the internal PCI modems fail in
the Packard but work ok in my other PCs. One of the internal ones min spec
is P233 MMX (as per the Packard) so maybe this could be a reason) but one is
the AZT3013PnP sound/modem. I have had that working in my 98 machine but not
the packard!
Thanks for the replies by the way!

Yes it would be the case if the Dial Up Networking connection
properties were set to just do blind dialling.

| First thing to troubleshoot and have not seen a post that you had tried to
plug a phone in the outlet to see if you even get a dial tone.
1) Check for dial tone with a phone
If you get a dial tone, try dialing the number that your modem is trying to
dial and see if you get an answer with data signals-it will sound simular to
fax tones.
2)If step 1 works, then that jack works. If there is no dialtone on that
jack, take the phonline to a phone that you know that works, unplug the
phone and plug in the cable for the modem and reinstall DUN, configure your
settings and give it another shot.
3)if this is a business, make that the phoneline is not a digital line. If
it is your residental, then most likely it is a anonlog line and you are
fine. Modems will NOT work on a digital line, just to note.
Verify that the jack does work and post to let us know.
Then I can help you further.

Check the thread again Billy, that's been checked. I thought of that too.

So I tried ticking "wait for dial tone before dialling" and all modems fail
to dial, the external and internal pcis. The internal PCIs work on my other
98 machine no problems! Is there another option for blind dialling apart
from what I have ensured is ticked??

Yes I have tried that and it works fine. The number is good too as I use it
for my internet connection now!!!!!

Reinstalled DUN, then Windows 98 reinstalled after a format. Still the same.
Have even tried it at a different location and still the same.

Yep its residential

| Did you ever think that you may just have too many things connected to
the phone line?
Try unplugging a bunch of other phones, etc. around the house and see
what happens.

In that event, when you exceed the REN value of the line, all the
phones ring at once when you plug the extra device in that takes the
total for all of them over the REN total.

| Matty, Where do you live? different countries use different dial tones,
thus a modem set up to work in the US will not work in the UK as the
tones are different. Also they do not use the same dialing frequencies,
US use DTMF, not sure what is used in UK. Make sure you intinalize the
modem with the right software to set up the proper dial tone detection.

Have you checked the possibility of an interrupt conflict? Something else may be
using the com port of the modem. Also, remember that Com 1 & 3 are associated,
as are Com 2 & 4. That is, if something is using Com 1, a modem on Com 3 won't
work.
The interrupts associated with the com ports are 3 & 4.

The Ringer Equivalence Number of modern telephone appliances does not
impact upon any device's ability to draw a dialtone. It merely
represents the total load seen by the 90VAC ring signal. The REN has
absolutely no bearing on the load at voice frequencies.

Nonsense. No phone will ring unless a ring signal is present. In the
worst case you may hear tinkling during pulse dialing in older
equipment, but most (all?) appliances these days have anti-tinkling
circuitry. In any case, no such tinkling can occur during tone
dialing.

Try using a real modem that has a controller.

Try using a modem with a controller. Especially with computers that have
a slow processor, controllerless modems can be problematic.

Hi, Matty. I know this sounds elementary; however, I have worked off
and on for long periods of time just to find an elementary problem. Try
physically moving your non-working comp. with known good modem installed,
into the e-x-a-c-t environment used by a WORKING modem/computer--identical
power lines, phone cables/connectors, wall outlets, etc. When it then
works, replace that elementary cable, line, adapter with a non-defective
one. HTH & good luck. sdlomi
