Hi

I am having problems trying to set up Internet connection sharing on my home
network.

I have a windows 2000 server acting as a domain controller connected to a
windows 98 client. When I enabled ICS the server reconfigured itself with
the IP address 192.168.0.1(which was as I expected, it was previously
assigned a static IP address of 10.0.0.1 and the W98 client used DHCP to
obtain an address in the 10.0.0.0 scope.). The problem is when I try to
renew the IP address on the W98 client, instead of being reconfigured with
an address in the 192.168.0.0 scope, it just says access denied, renewing
adapter. The IP address becomes 0.0.0.0
I have used network monitor to observe the process, and it seems the server
is trying to give the client a valid 192.168.x.x address but the client
won't accept it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Have you installed the ICS client software on the 98 PC? See
www.cablemodemhelp.com for more information.

OK
with the Win2k server having an IP of 192.168.x.x your client will also need
a IP of the 192.168.x.x scope maybe 192.168.0.2 for instance, this then
means that both the server and the client are talking on the same network,
having the client as 10.0.0.1 means it is on a different network. You will
also probably have to set up the W98 client as a user on the W2K server
machine so that it can use the server as a "gateway".
Hope this helps .

I've setup, as ICS clients, w95, w98SE, NT4, and XP boxen. I've never used
"ICS client software"; nor even a network setup disc. Just make sure TCP/IP
is bound to the NIC, and set to take its entire config from DHCP. Works
fine.

Fearing that one of us was deluded, I tried to check out that URL, and ...
well ... I'm not saying there's nothing on that entire website about "ICS
client software", but could you post something a little more specific?

ICS has its own minimalist dhcp server built in, so make sure your
win2k server is not trying to assign addresses in addition to that.
ICS won't work if it is. It sounds like your server was handing out
10.0.0.xxx addresses. Otherwise, recheck that your Win98 box is set
for for auto ip configuration, and reboot. Should do it.

I disabled the 10.0.0.0 scope and used network monitior to see what was
going on. It seemed that the w2k server was offering a 192.168.x.x address
but for some reason the w98 client was refusing it.
Is the fact that the w2k server is a domain controller the problem. Does ics
only work in a peer to peer network enviroment?

Normally the "access denied renewing IP address" means the client machine
itself is denying you access to renew its network adapter address, using
because you do not have sufficient rights.

For example, normally on an NT machine you cannot renew the IP address
unless you have administrator rights. Is it possible you are logged onto
the W98 machine using an account that does not have full admin rights?

Let us know the outcome.

Are you running any firewall software on either of the machines ?
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling TCP/IP on the Win98
client ?
Have you tried giving the Win98 client a static IP addy in the
192.168.0.x/24 range ?

yea try static address.. that might solve the problem?
