Modem Problem continued!!!
|
|
|
| My modem a Olitec Self Memory 2000 will dial but then seems not to send data
to connect to the ISP server... timing out after 60 seconds or so. I have
tried different telephone cables, serial cable and phone sockets with the
same result.
I have now tried a new internal PCI winmodem..Intel something which does
exactly the same thing.
The fault works like this. Clicking dial the modem makes the beeps as it is
dialling the number. Then where I would expect the screeching noise as I
assume data is sent to the ISP server all i get is silence with the time out
appearing after the set 60 seconds. This fault also appears when I try to
set up a new connection through the Windows referral number via Internet
properties connections.
I have tried many different settings changes..such as disabling header
compression, etc etc to no avail.
I have uninstalled dial up networking and reinstalled, still the fault
appears.
Any ideas cos I am getting desperate. I know the number I am dialling is
correct!!!
Windows 98 by the way, and have used all the same settings as my other PC
(which works fine)
Many thanks for any further help.

What do you hear from the modem when you dial no number? (just pick
up)?
Should be able to do this with hyperterminal... "ATD" command to the
modem.

| Is there ever a dial tone before the modem starts dialing? Try plugging a
phone into that same jack and see if there is a dial tone. Also, make sure
that the cable going from the wall jack into the modem is in the "Line" hole
of the modem, not the "Tel" hole.

| Some One has suggested the method that gets right to the
problem. Is it software or hardware? You don't even know
that. Break the problem down into component parts. Test
those parts. If the modem, without software can make a
connection, then you know which part is not a problem. Use
Hyperterminal as Some One suggests. If you make a connection
to your ISP only using that Hyperterminal, then modem is not a
problem.
Don't wildly try to fix or replace things until these basic
facts have first been collected. Hyperterminal - or plugging
a phone into the modem to see if the phone works via the mode
- are how to break a problem down - to eliminate possible
reasons for failure.

So its either Windows or your ISP. THe modem was never the problem.
Personally I'd go with Windows. Uninstall then re-install Dialup
Networking.
