| I have a client who had XP Pro installed and wanted to dual boot with
Windows 2000 so he booted off of the Win2K CD and installed it to another
drive and now XP won't start. Funny thing is there is no boot.ini file which
seems to me to be the problem as when it does start into XP it shows all
Windows 2000 like screens.
When the system starts the bootloader comes on and shows both XP and 2K, but
crashes when XP is selected. I find a boot.ini file in c:\windows\pss backup
file which I gather was generated under XP as Win2K is not listed in it.
Where is the boot.ini file then, since Windows 2000 is running
properly???????
Drive C (XP) is formatted NTFS as is D (Windows 2000) and both were/are set
to active drives. Any suggestions?

| Normally with dual boot, you install the earlier operating system first.
Then you do a clean install of the newer operating system and you
will have the choice to select dual boot during the install. My guess
is that if 2000 boots and runs now, that if you did a clean reinstall of
XP that you may have your problem resolved. I am not sure is you can
operating systems on separate drives if they dual boot nor am I sure
that they can both be active at the same time.

| agreed, however why is there no boot.ini file? I figure if I could find that
I would be able to modify it and hopefully get XP back without reinstallin
it.

No boot.ini file is required when the OS is installed on the first drive and
partition- create your own!

| I think that the reason you have this problem is that windows 2000 setup has
replaced two key files which are required for windows startup with older
versions of the files. These files will be found in the root of your c:
drive but are hidden. To see them type attrib (after opening a command
prompt) and you will see a list of files two of which are ntdetect.com and
ntldr (note the SHR attributes) you need to replace these files with the
ones found on your Windows XP installation cd and also set the attributes
back to SHR using the attrib command. You must have a boot.ini file
somewhere because you are getting a choice of Windows XP and Windows 2000 at
startup and that is what a boot.ini file does (mine is a hidden file in the
root of C

| Hi Daniel,
You can try using the fixboot or fixmbr option from the recovery console.

| Daniel:
Search the XP file data base on Microsoft's web pages for Missing or
corrupt Hal.dll. There is a fix that uses a boot from the XP CDROM into
the recovery council. From there, there is a command bootcfg/rebuild
that will rebuild the boot.ini file.
Found it.... The article is published under Q330184 - Look there and
you may be able to recover it without the clean reinstall that I
suggested previously
