| Hi-
I just took A+ O/S test and failed with a 517. I knew everything in my
book. I am really pissed at the school I went to, because we used a
book they wrote, and like the hardware test that I passed, there were
many questions on the test that dealt with either commands or utilities
that I have never heard of. Has anyone else had this problem? Can you
recommend Material that will actually prepare me? They are giving me
self test software that they didn't write-is this enough generally?
Thanx

| sorry to hear that you failed, you might want to try certyourself.com, or
maybe transcender? don't get discouraged it happens

| Hello,
I used Mike Meyers books for my A+ and Net+ and there wasn't much on the
exam that was left out of the book. From what I hear no one book can
completely prepare you for the tests but this one comes the closest IMHO. I
also used www.freecomptia.com for my practice tests and passed both tests
easily.
Hope this helps,
Pat

| Mike Myers All-in-One A+ Certification. It comes with a good CD with
practice tests. Thompson Course Technologies A+ Guide to Software by
Andrews is pretty good too. If you get it read the section in the back
on customer service. It was enlightening. We might work on machines
but our customers are Users. Too many techs bad mouth Users or talk
down to them. Without Users we would be out of a job

| You might also like to take a look at www.freecomptia.com they have free
test questions that are taken from the real comptia exams. That way you'll
know where youre falling short on knowledge.

| In addition to the help others have provided, here is my advice, as an instructor who has helped students achieve 50 A+ and Network+ certs over the past three years:
1. Practice with as many OSes you can get your hands on. For A+, this means DOS, Win95, 95B, 98, SE, NT4, and Windows 2000.
Starting with third or fourth quarter of 2003, the CompTIA list will expand to include Millenium and XP.
2. Make a list of features unique to each OS.
One example: Internet Connection Sharing first appeared on 98SE, and is available on W2K and XP.
3. Check out the CompTIA A+ OS objectives at their website, and ensure you understand what the files/utilities are and how to use them.
4. The best/recommended practices of the CompTIA Subject Matter Experts may not square with how you would do it, but on the test, theirs is the only right answer.
There's always a chance CompTIA, Microsoft, etc will seed new questions into their exams. The goal is to be so well prepared that a few misses won't sink you. To borrow a quote Green Bay quarterback Bart Starr attributed to his coach Vince Lombardi, "We're going to chase the heck out of perfection, and catch excellence in the process."
Hope this helps. |
