Frustrated by network problems, I would be grateful for some kind soul to assist

| Hello, I am feeling very frustrated as I have got some boxes to make
a network up and I cannot get all to speak to each other.
I have been going around in circles for weeks and need to some help if
possible.
I have completed a MCSE course, but haven't done any exams yet.
I am pulling my hair out and would be so grateful if anyone can shed
any light on my problems.
==============================
==========================
I have the following on the network, Names first
Whale - Adv Server - Gateway 6400 Server
Cuttlefish - 2000 Pro - Generic - AMD-K6, 196 MB Ram
Shark - XP Pro - Generic - AMD Athlon 1800, 496 MB Ram
Dolphin - XP Pro - HP Pavilion 8575C - PIII, 256MB Ram
1 Linksys DSL router. Using cat 5 cables to the 4 ports, not using
the WAN port for the internet.
1 DSL modem USB (On the main machine on XP) Internet is working.
Q. I cannot get ANY of the pc's on this network to communicate
properly.
I have the same workgroup name "Ocean" on all boxes. I have different
names for each box - Whale, Shark, Dolphin, Cuttlefish
When I try to access the other pc's, I get the following errors:
Adv Server (Whale)
==========
Computers near Me - I can see all 4 names
Problems:
Cuttlefish - Incorrect password or unknown username
Whale - (THIS MACHINE)
Shark - Not accessible - The Network path was not found
Dolphin - Not accessible - The Network path was not found
XP 1 (Dolphin)

My Network Places, View Workgroup computers
Ocean is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find
out if you have access permissions" The list of servers for this
workgroup is not currently available
XP 2 (Shark)

Microsoft Windows Network, Ocean,
Shark (THIS MACHINE)

| Promoting Whale to a domain controller and making the other
computers members of the domain would solve the problem, but maybe you are
not quite ready to do that yet. A couple of things to check. -- Are all the
computers on the same network and subnet mask (ipconfig /all) - can you ping
all computers from each other by name and tcp/ip address ? Try disabling any
personal firewall software on the computers or make sure the computers on
the lan are not blocked by it. Is file and print sharing and client for
Microsoft networks enabled/bound on all computers? Is netbios over tcp/ip
enabled on all computers (check tcp/ip /advanced properties/wins). Try
setting the local administrator account to the same user name and password
on each computer and log in using that account when trying to access the
other computers (this is NOT recommended in a real production network to say
the least). Have you messed around with any security settings such as ipsec
policy?? Good luck. --- Steve

| Sounds like a IP address problem. If you only have 4 PC's you might as well
give them static IP's with a suitable mask. After this try pinging each of
them using their IP address.

| LOL read the post under this and maybe we should charge a commission LOL
just kidding
get static IP addresses like 10.0.0.1/2/3/4 and a subnet of 255.255.255.0
for all the PC's.. that should work... make sure you have TCP/IP, File and
printer sharing and Client for Microsoft networks selected in the network
properties..
I have always had difficulty running XP pro and 2000 pro together.. I just
kill the XP and install 2000 and things work a lot smoother.. especially in
the printer sharing dept

| If you're going to stick with classful ip addressing and you choose
10.0.0.0 as your network id then you "should" use 255.0.0.0 as the
mask since this is a class A private ip range. For 255.255.255.0 use
192.168.0.0 for the network id. Telnet the router (or use the linksys
config software) and set the private ip to 192.168.0.1 (the
conventional router address) and dhcp enable the public ip. all other
ports should be in the private range. Set the ip addresses for the
private hosts to static and give them addresses in the private range.
file and print sharing and client for microsoft networks must also be
installed. Be sure to set the default gateway to the router address. I
have networks with the OS combinations you describe and have no
problems. Throw in a couple of Unix servers and connect to a netware
network and see the fun.

| This may seem simple, but if you have a workgroup environment you must
create identical username & passwords for each user on every PC. Otherwise
the PC's won't be able to communicate.
Also check TCP/IP settings & test them.
Use ipconfig and ping to test connectivity.
Try to ping each PC in turn by using IP address & then by name.

| My Linksys router will not work as a DHCP server if the WAN port is not
connected. Use static addressing as "Blaze" suggested. Also, use the correct
Subnets for Class A/B/C IPs as Jim said. Good Luck.
