Hi I am one PC with Windows 2000 Server with a domain set up on it. The
other is with XP Pro. When i try and get XP Pro to join the domain, it keeps
saying that the specified server can not perform the requested operation -
that is after is asks me for a user name and password that can join the
domain.

Can anyone throw any light on the matter.

I can get the two coputers to communicate, ie through ping and net send
commands.

Thanks

Denis

Can you ping the server using its name?
Are you using admin password/username?
Trying making the XP machine join a Workgroup first, then reboot and join
the Domain.

As you are getting asked for a user name and password I am guessing that
youp XP machine is communicating with the W2K box. The user & password
being asked for is the Administrator & Password for the server machine.

This is usually a dns problem. Make sure that dns is installed and
implemented correctly on the domain controller. Check that the domain name
zone exists on the dc, that the domain subzones with srv records ( _msdcs,
etc) are there, that dynamic updates are enabled for the zone, that the dc
points to itself (and only itself) as the preferred dns sever by it's actual
tcp/ip address, and that the XP computer points to only the dc as it's
preferred dns server. There are two great diagnostic tools on the cdrom for
W2K that you can use to help troubleshoot these problems - netdiag for all
computers and dcdiag for domain controllers. They are in the support/tools
folder I think. You will want to install the .msi file for the support
tools. Run Also check your event viewer on each computer for any clues, ---
