Getting Started With Microsoft Servers

| Group,
I would like to clear up the mud on my "Microsoft Newbie" post a few days
ago.
1. I am coming to realize that companies want NT/2000/XP as a part of an
engineer's skillset.
2. What is the first cert to get?
With Cisco it's CCNA...what about Microsoft?
3. Recommended reading?
TIA,

| Well, it depends on what specific technology...but I would say if you have
all Windows 2000, then 70-210 is your first exam. If you have Windows XP,
then it's 70-270.
As far as general reading, I like the Special Edition Using and Platinum
Edition Using books by Que, good over view. You can't go wrong with the
Resource Kits from Microsoft either. If you want exam specific books, I
would recommend Que training guides, Que Exam Cram2 or the Sybex study
guides.
Best,
Will

| The MCSA track would be a good start and passing your first test would make
you a MCP. I highly recommend that you read Mark Minasi's Mastering Windows
2003 Server first. It will give you a great overview of 2003 and 2000 with
real world advice and examples. Then you can read whatever exam books that
you see that are recommended here or have good reviews, I have not taken an
exam for a while so I don't know what is the "best" these days. In addition
to exam specific books I recommend you pick up the various MS Press Pocket
Consultant series such as XP Pro, Windows 2000, or Windows 2003 which cut
out all the fluff and are easy to carry around with you to study during any
spare time. Finally I finally recommend the Microsoft Windows Security
Resource Kit as a read/reference. I wish that book was around when I was
doing my exams. Good luck. -- Steve
