70-227 Study/Exam Report
|
|
|
| Hi Everyone,
Sat 70-227 today, cost £103.40 including VAT with Pearson VUE. Was
surprised to find that MS have gone full circle and, for this exam at least,
not only provide a required pass mark and your final score but a breakdown
of how you did against the 5 major exam objectives. You get two and a half
hours to complete 65 questions with a required pass mark of 700.
I found this exam to be more difficult than I thought it would be.
There was lots of potential for mistakes and I know I made my fair share of
them! A lot of the questions were quite wordy and the scenarios were
skilfully crafted to catch out the unwary. This coupled with the fact that
about 70 - 80% of the questions came with an accompanying exhibit meant that
even although the time allotted seems generous it is required as this is not
an exam to "rattle through" quickly. Many of the scenarios were out of the
ordinary and not the standard web server behind a bastion host or in a back
to back deal, with a SQL Server on the company intranet and it's clear that
MS want to be sure that you know how to fully exploit their baby in all
circumstances! Be comfortable with configuring your ISA Server to access
and give access to proprietary protocols between your and a partnering
company's network. Also be aware of the problems that residual
configuration can cause on published servers post MS Proxy 2.0 to ISA
upgrade blah blah etc.......
Study resources used were:
1. MCSE ISA Server 2000 Training Guide (New Riders) - A reasonable
book but I found the order of how things were dealt with a little strange
(client configuration was right towards the end). You get an excellent
question bank on the accompanying Exam Gear CD which, although written in a
different style than the real thing, are sufficiently tricky to get you in
the right mindset.
2. MS Press Training Kit - First time I have used one of these and I
was reasonably happy with it. It's appears to be a major cut and paste from
the ISA Server help files but arranged in a logical order for learning and I
liked the way the book is split into manageable lessons no longer than about
50 minutes. Each chapter has review questions which require answers in
sentences too!
3. Course 2159A (ISA Server) workbook - Borrowed this from work and
gave myself a DIY ISA course over the last week. I really liked this book
and it covers the ground well with well thought out labs at the end of each
module.
4. 70-227 Cramsession - A useful 56 page revision guide which stands
on its own without the abundance of links some of their other offerings
have. well worth £4.60 ($7.50).
Exam Resources used were:
1. Exam Gear (see above).
2. Trancender and Boson Demos - Trancender demo is 15 questions and well
worth the download (I did just slightly better than I did on the real
thing). The Boson one was OK but a little too easy.
3. Free exams on the Internet - Not much available for this one but
http://www.mcmcse.com/testing/index.php has a 25 question one which is OK as
a distraction.
After all that I only achieved a score of 731 so I scraped a pass. I
actually did quite well on everything except installation which
disappointingly was way down at about 45%. Working mainly with SBS, I guess
I didn't know my array installations as well as I should have so that's
something else to watch out for!
Regards,
DJKJ
