I need some help in getting a recommendation for a piece of
hardware...

The network which runs our business contains about 15 pieces of
hardware, some load-balancers, web servers, databases, etc. We are
looking for an UN-managed switch (or a managed one that we don't have
to configure) which can switch the traffic between all of these
pieces of equipment and the three three networks on whch they run.

Is there any single piece of hardware out there that comes
preconfigured with, say, 6-8 banks of 4 (or 6, or whatever) ports per
bank, where each bank of ports is isolated from the others?

We don't have huge amounts of traffic, and don't need anything super
fancy as far as switch management goes. But it would be nice to
handle all of our switching with one piece of equipment, without
having to buy many small switches, or configure a sophisticated one.

To me it sounds like you need to get yourself a layer 2 switch
(managed)

The capabilities you're looking for arent generally available in
unmanaged switches unless you buy separate ones (sorry) You sound like
you're asking for a managed layer 2 switch like the 2900 enterprise or
a corebuilder 3500. Both can be purchased from ebay for pennies on
the dollar at the moment compared with retail.

The cisco 2924 isnt rocket science and has an easy to use web
interface as well as some pretty good step-by-step instructions at
www.cisco.com and if you talk nicely to them the cisco study usenet
group can be very helpful indeed.

The Corebuilder (3com) isnt the nicest to work with but comes with
four blocks of 6 ports and works at layer 2.

You wont get fired for buying Cisco....
You can even get some killer deals after some research off all the outlets
that handle bankrupt dot.coms. It all depends on how many total ports you
need.

I usually on small installs do a 4503 its anice 3 blade switch you can grow
as you need.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products...heets_list.html
is a link to the data sheets. There are smaller ones available and larger.

Also this depends on budget.

I have had clients run 3com, LInksys and yes Netgear and Dlink that met
their needs and budget.
