My employer, a small private school just bought a new server (Dell) to
replace the old NT4 PDC. We only have 65 nodes, all I want to do is set it
up as a single domain controller, I didn't want to use AD and DNS, but I
guess I have to. I know nothing about active directory, trees, forests, etc.
Can anyone suggest a W2K Server book that will guide me through the
configuration process? Can someone give me suggestions about DNS naming
conventions? I didn't want to use a "_.com" for a domain name, I wanted
something simple like "CAMPUS". I'm used to NT4, which was FAR easier to set
up.

Thanks in adv.

Dave

BTW, I'm just a teacher who knows enough about PC's and small networks to
become the school's unpaid sys admin. I'm not looking to earn my MCSE.

Dave,

If this is the only server on your network I don't see any problem in
just running it in a workgroup environment thus saving you from the
complexity of setting up AD and DNS (if you was feeling adventurous you
could set up WINS on the server to eliminate NetBIOS traffic on the LAN but
that's not essential). It would just be a case of creating local user
accounts on the server and configuring the clients who just authenticate
with the local SAM on the server to get access to resources. If you live in
a multiple server world then just make the Windows 2000 server a member
server in your NT4 domain. Hope this helps.

Mastering Windows 2000 Server 4th Edition by Mark Minasi would be
the book for you - check out its reviews on Amazon. It is a big book, but
you won't need to read it all or even most of it. You will suffice with a
real simple set up - single domain/tree/forest. Good luck. --- Steve

Are you going to run Exchange Server or SQL? If so you will need AD.
The naming convention is pretty simple as long as you stick with it. I
have a test network with the names computer.cats and dogs.cats.
