| I am studying at
the moment with computeach and although the course material is very good and
useful. I am finding it very difficult to "take in" what I am learning! I
think this is mainly due to not having the "hands on" experience as well. I
have already failed the Professional and Server mock exams (56% and
50%)respectively, and I am now reading through the Syngress/Osbourne study
guides before I attempt the mock exam for a second time! Only when I achieve
above the 80% pass mark will I be invited to in-centre training and to sit
the official exam. To be honest, I am seriously considering jacking the
course in if I fail the mock again. Do you have any tips or advice on how to
take all this new stuff in!!

I am about to decide whether to take their SQL Server 7.0 course and
would appreciate any thoughts on this course or any other of their
courses ( course material, tutor support and in centre training )
Thanks in advance

| ok, forget the osbourne books and the crap NetG they give you. get some
sybex 2nd edition books.
Also dont panic over the mock exams. they are currently being re-written by
transcender as they are crap questions due to non-disclosure rules set by
MS.
after failing the pro/server mocks many times i got really annoyed, the best
thing to do is to go through there stuff, read the books once or twice, then
do the mock, if you fail keep calling them till they have told you
everything you need to know.
dont ask them for the answers ask them where your going wrong on the
question
btw - dean is the best person to speak to if you can get hold of him!!
mail me if you need any other help
i passed pro/server in sep, the next 2 exams in november, and did 218 exam
to make MCSA in dec, doing the last section atm!

ok you and Michael are both ahead of me... Ive only just sat the networking
exam.... like yesterday!! have to admit on reading through the stuff so
far I was surprised to see how much of it is out of date! but seeing as it's
based on the old MS networking essentials (i.e. NT4 days) I'll forgive em
for that .... I am looking forward to getting onto the next stage tho.
What I would say is follow Michael's advice it seems sound... and don't be
afraid to hassle them.. heck it's what we're paying for isn't it ???
Can I ask is anyone who is currently studying working in the industry
already ?? Or does everyone come from a none IT background here ???

| well iv never really had a proper job only part time as im pretty young.
What i would advice is to try and worm urself into the industry asap or you
will NOT get the job your aiming for whatever quals you have!!
even if it means taking a pay drop from what your on now in a non-IT job.
The money and jobs are certainly out there, but without a years experience
in IT they really dont like taking people on. Iv got MCSA (5*MCP) and iv
been studying computing in various aspects for 8 years and i cant get a good
job as i have no commercial experience.

| I am currently working in Mechanical Engineering. I started the course with
Computeach to try to get a career change. I am now wishing that I had taken
a different approach like going to night school so that I could have been
getting the "hands on" experience. I feel that just reading the theory is
not enough to allow you to absorb everything that you need to know.
I hope I am not sounding too negative about this but at the moment, I am
well behind with the schedule that was planned out for me when I started the
course!
Cheers, John.

| I agree with John. I too am well behind and feel there should be more for
people like myself who can't afford a home lab setup of 2 - 3 computers for
hands on experience. Just reading the stuff doesn't get it to sink in like
doing it. More improvement is needed.

Feel free to add me and Michael and Tamus please feel free to do the same,
In this game networking (social not technical) is a major part of the field
so I find.
John and Tamus hang in there guys theroy always sucks... but you've made he
decision to go for it (and paid for it!!) heck you may as see it
through..... yeah I know sometimes easier said than done.... but hopefully
we can devolp our own support group on top of conputeach's one (ok very
loosely put there...lol)
cheers

| Hands on experience is the best way to learn..but if you're poor like me or
just don't have a lot of space for a huge lab then what?
You can simulate quite a bit on today's Pentium 4 and Athlon 4 computers
with programs like Virtual PC programs and VMWare. If you have 256+ megs of
ram you can run multiple virtual computers at the same time (virtual
domains, clients, servers) and try out all kinds of scenarios. Even older
computers can run virtual machines.the performance isn't great but they work
and they'll give you something to learn on. You can get trial versions of
the virtual computers and most of Microsoft's operating systems. Microsoft
does charge a $15 or so for shipping in some cases (my .NET Release
Candidate was around $18) but they work for the trial period. If you have
just one computer virtual machines are a great way to test applications and
teach yourself about other operating systems without going broke or
corrupting your computer.
