| I support free of charge a NT 4 SP6 network with 50
clients for a small private school. Over the weekend there was a 1 day power
failure, and the UPS was drained. When the teacher in charge of computers
powered the server back up Monday morning, everything was fine except after
she logged on the server, she got a pop-up stating there wasn't any servers
available.
When I arrived, I opened network neighborhood, got the message "network is
not present or not started". I checked event log, and got the following: Net
Logon service not started, Alerter service not started, Computer Browser not
started, RPC service not started, workstation services won't start. I
checked under services, and all of the services set to automatic will not
start manually.
When I try to start the "workstation" service, I get the message that the
"NT_SRV" is not a valid name", I get other error messages when I try to
start other services. There are 2 NIC's in the server, I can ping to both. 1
is DHCP, the other is static to allow for an older Xerox net printer that
won't work behind a firewall/DHCP. Nothing strange about ipconfig.
Now for the weird part. The network is working. All
clients can hit the network and have all network
resources, including printing, Internet, and internal e-
mail. The e-mail server is MDaemon v4, and works just fine (its on the same
box). Internet is SDSL through a DHCP router/firewall. Up to today,
everything has been working fine, no problems.
Does anyone have any answers or solutions for me, I haven't ever run into
any problem like this before. BTW, the latest ERD was lost last week when it
was "accidentally" written over by an idiot teacher.
Thanks for all your help.
