| I hope this is a simple question. I am trying to block spam email from
hitting a users Inbox. How can I do this on an Exchange5.5 server?. My
company has been inundated with junk email lately.
| |
|
| disconnect from the network is the free way
the alternative is to buy 3rd party software

| You can with exchange 5.5 set rules for witch traffic is accepted, try the
help button, as I remember it is easy to setup.

| I agree with Mike. Get a good third party software package. I have used
Trend Micro's Viruswall product on with Exchange 2000 with good results.
Viruswall is of course an antivirus scanner. You can then purchase an
add-on called E-manager which will allow you to block spam along with
several other excellent functions. It is very easy to set up and
configure. You can download evals for each from Trends website to test
with.

There is a freeware program call mailwasher http://www.mailwasher.net/ that
you run before you open your email client. It allows you to view all
incoming emails and decide on whether to bounce them back at the spammer or
keep them.

Mailwasher is a good product for home use where you are using POP3 for your
email. I would not recommend it for a business environment. First, it has no
antivirus capabilities. Second, the spam is still sent into the users mailbox
on the exchange server, and the end user must run mailwasher themselves.
Third, and I could be wrong on this as I haven't tested Mailwasher out much,
but it may not even work in an exchange environment. I believe it only POPS
mail down from the server. To the poster, spend the money and get a good
antivirus/spam filter software application. The money you spend now will more
than be made up for with less helpdesk calls, less strain on your mailserver in
processing spam, and less work for the adminstrator. I think mailwasher is
great for home use, and use it myself, but it is not a corporate solution.
Again, I have worked with Trends viruswall with the emanager add-in and it has
some excellent featuers and will provide quality antivirus scanning, with
frequent automatic signature updates, and the ability to block spam and filter
outgoing email to words or phrases that may pose a legal liability to your
company. Hope this helps.
