Really dumb question

| Charles K. MacKay 2002-08-25, 10:29 pm |
| I think I know the answer to this one already, but I have to convince a
pointy-haired boss (see Dilbert) and need a little backup:
If we are running FrontPage 2002 server extensions on IIS 5.0 serving 3500
commercial web site clients in a Windows 2000 network with only one domain
controller (which we are) and we use integrated Windows authentication for
clients with IIS and FrontPage (which we do) AND the one and only DC dies,
none of our clients who use IIS and FrontPage will be able to get into their
sites to make changes, etc., and will be monumentally pissed.
True or false? I am 99.99% certain that the answer is true, but like I said,
I need backup to get the PHB (pointy-haired boss) to cough up $600 for
another DC.
Thanks in advance for any insights --
Regards,
Charlie

| The only environment that I would ever build with only a single DC is a test
lab. Period. Once a decision has been made to use AD integrated security,
the commitment should be made to it's proper configuration. I've even
consulted small clients (who couldn't afford much expensive server hardware)
to use a workstation class machine if necessary to be a second DC. Active
directory restorals from backup tape are no picnic. Your world is gonna
suck big time if your DC dies. I also doubt that your PHB is going to
accept the responsibility of such an occurrance. If 3500 commercial web
site clients means you have 3500 users, you are WAY beyond the recommended
number of users per DC anyway....and you should probably be considering (at
least) your THIRD DC by this time.
Best of luck, and I'd definitely be paying homage to the DC gods if I were
you...
