Computeach anyone?
|
|
| Graham 2002-07-26, 3:25 am |
| Had a guy round from a UK company called 'Computeach' last night to
'interview me' as he put it for a course. I want to do Networking and after
an hour chatting he said he would recommend me for acceptance to thier MCSE
course which would be a Windows2000 Professional/NT course. I know nothing
about this and wondered if this was a good step into IT?
The cost is £3500 all in. Guaranteed pass, 15 days practical at the base in
Dudley including accom and any exam resits etc.
They seem very switched on, but as I say, I know nothing about them or
getting into IT. I have a lot of building PC experience and have been doing
some home tuition on basic PC use and troubleshooting in peoples home, so I
have a good basic working knowledge of computers and troubleshooting but am
self taught and want to get qualified.
Any advice would be great!
Thanks
Graham
P.S I am 38, would that go against me when trying to get a job?

| I am always weary of anyone who says Guaranteed pass, how the heck can you
guarantee how smart I am....unless they are using dumps...then they would
have to guarantee that you have good memory. I would make sure they are an
Authorized Training Center.

| Thanks for the reply.
Check website you might see a floor:-
http://www.computeach.co.uk
They seem to have credentials coming out of thier ar**
They have a selection process hence the entry test I took and interview,
have been established 38years and say they have a process of picking the
right people and the exam pass rate is 92%, the remaining 8% pass second
time. If that is true they must be doing something right.
Thanks again

| Graham,
I thought about going with Computeach about 18 months ago but decided
against it. If I remember rightly they have their own recruitment division
and I remember ringing them to pick their brains about the state of the job
market at the time (will someone based in Dudley be able to help you get a
job where you are?). They also run a list of (obviously satisfied)
ex-delegates whom you can contact. Unfortunately, non of these had actually
taken the course I was thinking about (which was not MCSE, although that is
what I'm doing now).
I ended up doing one MCP (W2k Pro and A+) using instructor lead training
and have since completed another three self-study. If you can afford to set
up a decent lab of 3 or more PCs, are able to follow Training Books (have a
look at the Sybex or New Riders book on Windows 2000 Professional next time
you are in Waterstones although you will probably need to buy at least one
MS Training guide to get the evaluation copies of Pro and Server), and have
the self-discipline to self-study you could probably achieve your goals,
essentially doing the same thing as you would with Computeach, without
parting with such a large amount of cash. Bye the way, there are loads of
authorised test centres in the UK. Visit www.vue.com to find the one
nearest to you.
I am not trying to put you off Computeach. Indeed, making such an
investment is probably a great incentive to see the process through and you
will have your own "Mentor" and their support infrastrucure to help you when
you get stuck. Just suggesting options you may want to consider.
Regards,
DJKJ

| Thanks very much for the informative reply.
They have a very impressive list of all the FTSE companies bar one who have
taken former Computeach students on. They say they have contact through
their recruitment division, so they can find employment in any corner of the
UK and promised they never fail to find you work, they even set up the
interviews, train you in interview techniques etc etc.
Just all seems a bit too good to be true (and a big investment!), hence the
post.
Thanks
Graham

| I would be very wary of them, solely because they advertise in the
'situations vacant' section.
IT is a very difficult industry to get into atm, unless you have experience
in the industry (Catch 22), or can/will lie confidently.
Have a look on jobserve.com, or your local paper to see what vacancies there
are, and what the employers are looking for.
£3500 is a lot of money for a qualification that may or may not be worth the
paper it's written on.
NT would be very useful to study, most companies still use it, but you can't
take the exams any more (I think there is one new exam covering NT, but
that's another story).
If you have the self-discipline, self-study would be much cheaper. You can
probably still buy NT4 MCSE books (if you want to learn about NT), and if
you search through the google archives of alt.certification.mcse and
microsoft.public.cert.exam.mcse for 'book', you'll find lots of advice on
Win2k books.

| Graham, just think how can anyone "Guarantee" success when they don't
even know if you're gunna put any effort into your studies?
And to the second part of your question no you are not too old for
this!
Cheers

| Thanks guys for the replies, I really appreciate it!
If I wanted to work by myself for this, what would be the best starting
point to get a taste of what I am getting into? Maybe a good book
suggestion to read through?
Thanks again

| But they give it you in a written agreement 100% guarantee pass and they
will pay fees until you pass.
How can that not be a guarantee?

| well actually...
wot they do is produce you with some work, and books, and cd's, and set you
off on your way. stage 1 is too easy, stage 2 is good, networking
essentials, when you get to stage 3 u haveto do pro and server at the same
time, they send you a mock paper which u need to get 80% on both the pro and
server exam, until u do this u cannot go and try out the real papar, so
there they are not paying for anything until you almost have no chance of
failing becuz ythe mock papaers are so hard!!
you onlu have 2 years to complete the entire course, so they dont loose out
in any way, and you do if you are unable to complete the mock papers
succesfully. this is the problem im having at the moment, they keep saying
iv failed the mock, but dont tell me what iv got wrong or wot mark iv got
which i find very frustrating!!
