XP->W2K ICS Question
|
|
|
| I decided to play around with XP a little on my home network and I have run
into a strange problem. Maybe someone else has seen it.
I have a W2K server with ICS to the Internet. I then setup XP to use the
W2K server as its proxy and default gateway.
Here comes the strange thing...
I can ping the sites on the internet both by name and ip. But when I try to
access a site in the browser it will only bring up the IISStart.asp page
from the W2K server. The address line will stay whatever I put in, and it
even changes the icon when I try www.cnn.com, but it has the under
construction page that is the default on the W2K server if you do not put
any webpages on it. I even changed the default page on the webserver, to
make sure, and I always get the default page of the ICS computer.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jim

| Are you running Proxy Server on the Win2k machine ? If not, don't tell the
XP machine to use a proxy.

| I agree with Andy's reply, you probably have XP set up to use the 2k Box as
a proxy server.
Also, if you're not hosting web pages on IIS, then why do you still have it
running? It's a gigantic security risk if it's not properly managed, and my
guess is that it's not, seeing as you have the default "under construction"
page being displayed. If you need to have it for your studies, I would
suggest changing the service start type to manual, and then turning it on
only when you need it.
