| Hi
Would anybody be able to help me out with the following.
I have a 3 machine test network.
Machine 1 - Win2k Server
This is configured as the domain controller, It has a static IP address of
192.168.10.2
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
This machine is also running as a DNS server with a forward and reverse
lookup zone ,
configured to allow Dynamic Updates
It is also running as a DHCP server with a scope of 192.168.10.1 ->
192.168.10.100
with exclusions of 192.168.10.2 & 192.168.10.3
Machine 2 - Win2k Server
This is configured as a Member server with a static IP address of
192.168.10.3
DNS server configured to be 192.168.10.2
Machine 3 - Win2k Pro
DHCP assigned IP address, and gets DNS details from the DHCP scope.
The problem i have is that Machine 1 is also configured as a RAS server.
Whenever i dial into this machine from a remote machine via RAS it gets an
IP address from
the RAS server , (all ok) , it has a valid reference entry for the DNS
server (192.168.10.2)
BUT the subnet it recieves is 255.255.255.255
The machine does not register itself with the DNS server and no name
resolution is possible
I can connect to all the other machine using IP addresses ,but not by using
names.
I get the same situation if i connect to the RAS server via a VPN
connection.
Can anybody say why i am getting an incorrect subnet mask , and also , how
can i get the remote
machine to register itself with the DNS server when it connects?
I know DNS and DHCP are working fine , as when machine 2 logs in on the
network , DHCP and DNS
all work fine.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated, with an explanation as to where i
am going wrong

| The subnet mask is not wrong for a RAS session. It quite correct.
Why don't you get the DHCP server to update the DNS server for you, thus
cutting down on the time and traffic flowing over the slow link, seeing as
though they are on the same machine.??
I dont know why you cannot resolve names..have you tried nslookup on the
client?? You dont need to register with DNS to use it as such.
Anyhow, hope this gets you going at least.
