'however, the ntfs file system is not supported by floppy drives, nor is it
used on most removable disks"
could someone please point me to more information about this? what exactly
does this mean?

The NT File System has a 50MB overhead but there are utilities available on
the Internet to support NTFS on floppy and removable drives.

this is probably a really stupid question, but i just gotta ask it. does
this mean that if you use ntfs file system, you can't save anything on
floppy disks? or removable disks?

It means a floppy can't be formatted with the NTFS file system.

thanks for you patience. i just want to clarify. if my system is running
with ntfs file system, i can save on floppies, but if i had to format the
floppy, i would have to take it to another system running fat32 and format
it with that machine? Is that right??

No. Your system ALWAYS uses FAT12 on floppies. It is capable of using
FAT12, FAT16, FAT32 or NTFS on a harddisk and it will always use CDFS
on CD-media, unless they are audio CD's. See also

NFTS itself takes up 5 megabytes minimum.

> nor is it used on most removable disks"

NFTS has more overhead and longer search times than FAT16 up to about
400 megabytes of disk space. File system security is also a questionable
advantage on a removable disk. If you send the newpaper to the printing
house on a removable disk, then you want them to be able to read the DtP
files so that they can make printing plates from them and print the
newspaper.

however, if you want to boot from the floppy to=20
....W2K, NT4, XP, then the floppy must be formatted from one of those (to =

....Win98, then the floppy must be formatted from DOS, Win9x (to seek =

IO.SYS)

XP can lay down a MSDos type of boot disk with an IO.sys.... The boot disk
comes out think it came from Windows ME but it's better than 2000's
inability to do that at all.

I recently for the first time set up my hard drives as NTFS, switching
from FAT32, and I actually gained some space, based on before/after
free space numbers.

Not sure...it was 4k with FAT32. I didn't even bother to check that
