Author Power Supply Problem??

System: Athlon XP 1700+ CPU, 256 MB DDR, Elite K7S5A3 Motherboard, 300W
Power Supply, Windows XP Pro.

Fault: On initial boot and subsequent 2 boots, power to the case is lost and
PC shuts down after about 2 minutes. Then after this everything works as
advertised. I am thinking along the lines of Power Supply unit as all
connections seem secure. All components such as Printer and Monitor are
connected to a strip plug, but these remain powered up.

Has anyone got any other thoughts on this??

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Matty

What I should have added was all correct beeps are present, and nothing on
the initial boots point to the impending failure! Also there are no windows
error messages etc.

Don't know if it will help but when I upgraded to a K7S5A with Athlon XP2000
I had to change the power supply from 300W to 400W.

Got to agree with you, I had an identical problem, replaced the PSU
and cooling fan on the processor and the problem went away

I should upgrade mine from 300 to 400. Mine likes to reboot for no apparent
reason whatsoever. So I have to set the CPU/memory clock to 100/100
instead of 100 CPU and 133 memory. Works fine for now.

That motherboard is known to be pickier about the PSU than the average
board, or perhaps being a lower-cost motherboard, it is more often
paired with a lower-cost PSU. If there is any question as to the
quality of your PSU, consider replacing it.

For the benefit of future readers, it might also be helpful if you
post which make/model/etc PSU wouldn't work (if a different PSU does
solve the problem, of course).

You are asking for a solution without even providing the
first information collected. What were the readings from your
3.5 digit multimeter - especially when failure was occurring?
Lessons to discovering intermittents also was posted in
"computer doesn't work in cold, what is culprit?" in the
newsgroup alt.comp.hardware. Of course you have XP.
Therefore you have system logs that collect reasons for
failures. What did those system logs say?

Anyone who even suggests a solution would have to recommend
replacing everything until the problem disappears. That is
called shotgunning - a practice considered unethical or
fraudulent in most industries. First get facts. Without those
facts, no one can provide any reasonable answer. Notice what
located a defective computer in that alt.comp.hardware post.
