I used the Sybex book for SQL, but it is one of the few Sybex books
I'm not sure if I could recommend to others. It does have enough
information to get you to pass, but there are a few holes (like
reading log file dumps) and the test itself can be tricky.
Take a look here for a few more options:

Good luck!

| When i took SQL admin and design i tried my hand at Sybex. The book was
quite erroneous in many respects i.e. conflicting statements. I then started
using microsoft press books for microsoft exams. That was the key. I don't
know why people rave on about Sybex, i find the books somewhat annoying,
especially their index.
Even if you use microsft press, there are sure to be errors in the book. It
might be a good idea for you to look up the publishers website and get the
latest errata.

One thing I liked about the Sybex books is their consistent approach
to presenting the material. You won't find any other publisher that
covers so many topics, across vendors.
Granted, the material is rather dry but if I'm looking for
entertainment I'll get a novel. The study guides I buy are for
gaining knowledge as efficiently as possible.
I'm afraid I can't comment on the index being that I've never used it.
My way of approaching the book is to read the entire book and then go
back and do all of the chapter questions. Based on the results of
those questions I go back and reread some chapters. Finally, if a
Study Notes is available, I'll read that just before taking the exam.
Before certain life changes (such as getting engaged and extensive
business travel) slowed down my studies, I was averaging about three
weeks per test using this technique. Out of twelve different tests I
only had one fail (70-228...go figure). Sybex must have done
something right.
Granted, the dry content of Sybex isn't for everyone. And every book
will have a certain number of errors. The edition of the book (first
vs third) will usually reflect in the error count. However, for me
and I'm sure many others, Sybex is a good publisher.

| Well we all have our own ways of studying. I just find the microsoft press
and cisco press books interesting in the way they are written. However the
approach of Sybex isn't my taste. For instance when i compare Cisco's ICND
book to Sybex's CCNA Study Guide, there is no comparison. Cisco takes on a
better, more readable approach to the material. The Sybex book shoots off in
all directions and fragments the content. I wasn't talking about
entertainment value. If entertainment were the case, I'd pick myself up one
of those dummies books.
True, Sybex covers an enormous amount of topics across vendors, I grant you
that. But I look more towards the quality of the individual book, rather
than the generalised IT scope the publisher takes on.
Each of us are unique in the ways we approach our studies. My methods have
worked very well for me. However it's always nice to get other peoples
opinions.
Cheers,
bobwonky

| Thanks for the input guys
I always used Microsoft Press in the past but now I have to do those 2 admin
(Exchange and SQL) for my job, they pay for the books etc but wasn't sure
which to use, hence the question. As for Cisco, I used Sybex for CCNA 1.0
but all the rest was Cisco Press, just as like for my CCIE R&S which is now
postponed because of the Microsoft exams that I need to do.

CCNP CCDP MCSE (NT4)
PS another question, what would be the best design exam Win2k, I was
thinking of infrastructure but a friend recommended security?
