Terminal Services and it's already available if you plan to administer a
Windows 2000 server.

Well, it depends what you want to do. PC Anywhere will give you console
access, while TS only gives you a session. PCA is crap though. It's caused
alot of issues on our servers so now we use a product called Radmin. it's a
pretty sweet product.

Use Gotomypc..it is non-intrusive and has the best interface...its not free
but it has worked in every environment we have deployed it. Also it only
uses outbound ports so you don't have top compromise your firewall security
to gain remote control across the internet. www.gotomypc.com

Terminal services is the fastest, most stable of the Remote Control options.
However, no console access so if your running a machine and need console
access you're outta luck.. .Net server does have the ability to get console
access via terminal services so MS has recognized this need and provided a
solution.

I'd suggest VNC for remote use if you need console access. Its small,
fairly stable, and comes in a variety of flavors (encrypted, compressed,
wide open, etc...)

The only reason I'd suggest PCA or ControlIT is if you want to roll it out
to your whole enterprise and have centralized Mgt of the setups. We used
ControlIT like that for a while on about 50 servers but got tired of playing
the patch game. Plus the version on our NT4.0 boxes didn't play with the
version for the 2000 boxex. And you couldn't run both versions on the same
machine so you had to have 2 different machines (or dual boot) just to
remote control all your machines. I do not recommend ControlIT

So... in a nutshell... If you've got a win2k environment, use terminal
services. Its very rare that anyone needs console access. If you do have a
box that requires console access, load VNC on it.

A guy in the UK has put together a nice script that allows you to push
installs of VNC out to remote NT/2k boxes and automates the setup. He calls
it fastpush. Its really nice. http://www.darkage.co.uk/index.htm It comes
with an easily configurable setup and all the major flavors of VNC

Terminal Services in Remote Administrator Mode. You can access all the
Admin tools and if needed reboot the server from it.
