| Hi folks,
I'm going to start my MCSA track in Feb., and would like to start gearing up
now. I've been reading a few reviews on various study guides - what's the
scoop on the Sybex books and their accompanying CDs?
I'm looking at purchasing the 'core four' set from amazon - but there were
no peer reviews on there for good or for bad.
If these aren't the books to use, what would you recommend?
Thanks,
Ben

| Ben,
You will find lots of "Sybex fans" on this NG. I've used their Pro,
Server and Network Infrastructure books as well as the New Riders 4 core
which I was able to borrow from work. IMHO, the Sybex books are on the
whole well written and reasonably comprehensive but what I always think lets
them down is the standard of their end of chapter questions. The first
edition questions were far too easy and in no way represented the difficulty
level you would encounter in the exam. I used the Sybex and New Riders
books together and found the NR book to be far superior in terms of labs and
exam type questions. I brought the 2nd edition of the Sybex Network
Infrastructure TG and found, whilst they had clearly made the effort to make
the questions more difficult, all they had done was make them confusing and
open to misinterpretation (if only the MS questions were of the same
standard as the excellent Sybex CCNA guide they would be onto a winner).
Again, to me, the NR book was better because of the end of chapter
questions.
Sybex will always be a safe choice and they have helped many people
achieve their MCSE. However, I think most people would agree that you
should never use only one study guide. If you really want to learn Windows
2000 Mark Minasi's "Mastering Windows 2000 Server" makes an excellent
companion to the study guides or use a 2nd study guide - just to make sure
you don't miss anything. The Cramsessions are always a good place to finish
off with just a few days before you take the exam. I hope this helps and
good luck with your studies.
Regards,
DJKJ

I used the Sybex books for all of my Microsoft studies and was quite
satisfied. What drew me to them was a consistent approach to the
information across all books.
The CD's don't offer a lot of extra, but they do offer one good thing.
Most of the books contain movies of someone running through the hands
one exercises. If you don't happen to have a machine available to
load the server OS on, this can be a big help for understanding what
is going on.

Good luck!

| Sybex has worked for me on 70-210 and 70-215. In conjunction with
cramsession and Transcenders.

Thanks folks. Looks like I'll be ordering the Sybex books then. I've also
got the Win2k Server resource kit (all 18 lbs. of it) - but while I enjoy
using that as a reference, I'm not planning on plowing through it page by
page any time in the near future.
I've also grabbed the Transcender tests for win2k pro - they seem to be
decent. That and numerous web sites should get me up to speed with some
practice tests.
