New job...Thanks to MCSE.

| For everyone who has followed my job search since June, I finall decided on
a position. I'm starting Monday, and the salary is 140k/yr.
I've made more than that in this business before, but that's pretty good for
this economy. Basically, my MCSE in W2K was a requirement of the position,
but my experience and past track record of successes landed me the job.
I interviewed a lot after acheiving my MCSE, and turned down several offers
along the way. This one was the right one. It'll be a hell of a lot of
work, but I like the challenges this position presented.
Don't let anyone convince you that getting your MCSE is a waste of time. It
isn't. It is a necessary piece of a complete puzzle these days.

You probably wouldn't worry about what people think of you if you could know
how seldom they do.

| Bob, can you give me a quick overview of your education and previous employment history? That is an excellent salary, no matter how old you are. | |

20+ years total experience:
Ten years in a mainframe and UNIX environment, five more years as the Sr. NT
admin for a fortune 100 company, 5 more years as an independent consultant
(doing seriously difficult projects for many companies) on NT/2000 and UNIX
systems. Six figure salaries are not that uncommon for technical project
lead positions. The thing is that you have to be seriously qualified before
you can get them. My project track record is exemplary....always on time
and on (or below) budget. You also have to consider the area I live in.
Denver is expensive, so 140k here is equal to about 115k-120k in most places
in the US. Believe me, this isn't that big a deal. I had 3 years in a row
as an independent where I made over 220k per year doing projects for
different companies. Thing is, it's high risk. You can be fired in a
flash, and there's no guarantees beyond a few months. It's definitely not
for everyone. Typically, lots of travel too. You have to go where the work
is. I'm looking forward to slowing down a bit, and gladly willing to give
up some income to do it.
Education wise I have about 3 years of college, but tons of self study and
vendor courses. I'm going back to college to complete my degree within the
next 18 months.
