[Help needed] can't play any sound in Red hat Linux 7.3
|
|
| linux-newbie 2002-09-27, 2:29 am |
| Hi,
I'm a newbie and I've just installed Red Hat Linux 7.3. I have a P6BAT-A+
motherboard
with built in sound card (I tried to disable it in BIOS but can't find the
option for it) and a CREATIVE Vibra 128 sound card. This configuration works
fine in my Win ME (mine's a dual boot system).
However, I'm unable to play any sound or music in my Linux. I tried
sndconifg, and the system detected the sound card as a Ensoniq ES1371
AudioPCI-97 device and I tried other
configurations but failed.
So, here I am, in a silent Linux world. Any help would be great appreciate!
TIA
Jon

That's fine. Is it? If so, load the es1371 module (unless you use alsa
instead of oss, in which case load whatever the driver is in that ..).

| Hi Peter ,
Unfortunately, I can't play any sound under Linux. I can only do it in
Windows ME and I suspect it's either because of 1) hardware conflicts
between the two sound cards or
2) the driver for the sound card is not update to date (but where can I the
latest one?)
Any ideas?
Thx
Jon

| And I've tried Ensoniq ES1371 and other combinations but failed to get one
that will enable me to play any sound in Linux.

You already said so, and I told you to load the es1371 module. How does
yur comment relate to that instruction?
> Windows ME and I suspect it's either because of 1) hardware conflicts

Well, if they are pci, then they cannot conflict, but certainly YOU
would be confused over which one you are using. Take one out.
> 2) the driver for the sound card is not update to date (but where can I the
> latest one?)
What makes you think so? an es1371 is an old card now, and drivers have
been around for it for years, and in any case, the answer is "in the
kernel".
> Any ideas?
That you take what I say seriously instead of ignoring it! State
what you have done, what the results are, and the sources of your
evidence (i.e. post bits of log files, conf files, and so on) and
we can then begin to judge.
For the moment, I repeat: load the es1371 module. Then see if it works
by (1) looking at the kernel messages that the driver emits, (b)
testing by writing to /dev/audio. Do NOT load two audio drivers. If
another is already loaded, unload it. Provide data points so that we
can see the state of your machine .. the output from /sbin/lsmod and
relevant bits of dmesg would be nice.

I got a Soundblaster PCI 128 (also has the ES1371) in my box and it worked
without problems.
Just a few questions in addition to the ones Peter asked.
Did you check this few basic things:
Is the module loaded (type lsmod as root) If you see an entry snd-ens1371
and some other entries alsa is loaded fine.
If you use alsa all channels are muted by default so try unmuting them.
(type 'alsamixer' and try to unmute channels - the key is 'm')

RedHat 7.3 ought to have the current es1371 module, so it would be
inadviasble to try to download and compile another.
To load the module, open a terminal window and su to a root command
prompt, then enter:
# modprobe es1371
Then make sure that the file /etc/modules.conf has this line in it:
alias sound-slot-0 es1371
The module should then automatically load on boot and any modules upon
which it depends (like sound and soundcore) should also load.
Also, open a mixer such as Kmix or Aumix and run the Pcm and Digital
sliders to max and run the Volume slider to max but be ready to lower
it quickly (this is just in case your system starts at too low a volume
for you to hear.
Caveat:
If you load a sound module in the above manner, don't then use
sndconfig to test it as sndconfig will over-write your work. Instead
use the file that sndconfig would have used and play it directly, thus:
$ play /usr/share/sndconfig/sample.au

| Hi everybody,
Sorry for the late reply, I've already tried to load the ES1371 in sndconfig
but didn't seem to work (that's why I'd tried other sound modules). I guess
I'll tried out your suggestions later on and see how it goes. As I'm using
the WIN ME for some multimedia projects, so I can't make any hardware
changes at the moment. Sorry for the confusion, as I really a newbie in
Linux.
Thanks again!

You don't seem to understand this point - we are asking you to load it,
NOT "load it through sndconfig". Please do not trust anything but your
own eyes and fingers.
> I'll tried out your suggestions later on and see how it goes. As I'm using
They are not "suggestions", but an experimental procedure: take out all
sound modules, then load precisely the single one you want to test. That's
all! Do not use sndconfig or any gui, just do it yourself.

| Hi everyone,
I've tried out Clive's "procedures" and it works! However, so according to
Peter, sndconfig didn't really do the job? What's the difference between the
"modprobe" and the "sndconfig" command then? Sorry for the stupid question
but this is all too confusing for a guy that's been using MS windows all his
life.
