Author no desktop, no panel!

I have a very weird problem, which I only managed to overcome once but
don't really know how - at least I ended up in a console where I tried
to "panel", which came back as "Gtk-Warning: cannot open display",
startx, which also came back with an error message but eventually
Ctrl+Alt+F7 worked, however just that once as at all other times no
keyboard shortcut did anything at all:

When I log on Gnome starts all its services then tells me it's done
but all I get is either a completely blue or a completely black
screen. I can move the mouse around but clicking doesn't do anything
nor do any keyboard shortcuts (I've tried Ctrl+Alt+F1, Ctrl+Alt+Del,
Ctrl+Alt+F7, in fact all Ctrl+Alt+Fx combinations). I've only
installed Mandrake yesterday.

How can I get back onto it???

TIA.

Brigitte
