Similar portage distro?

| I there any distribution with a package manager similar to Portage for
Gentoo... meaning you can remove or update source based installs? What
would be the best is a distribution that is distributed as binary, but
could be updated and recompiled useing source and therefore optimized later
on.

Well...I'm not sure what you mean by "being able to update via source", as
ANY distribution can do that, and at least Red Hat even provides these
sources in their own package format, meaning you don't even have to
configure the sources yourself...
FreeBSD ports work in a similar manner to Gentoo's portage system.
