| Does anyone know how to run Winamp3 on linux? I did tar -xzf
winamp.tgz from the / directory, that worked. I type "Winamp" and I
get a window for 1 second and it terminates.

Well, don't! Install a package for your distro.

This is not going to accomplish anything. That's not installing. That's
putting some files in place. What about checking that the binaries are
compatible with your distro. What about configuring the thing? What about
reading the instructions in the README?
Please use a package prepared for your distro! That will be a rpm or a
deb, or whatever.

You've only unpacked it, you've yet to install it. Look at the files
you've unpacked and follow instructions that should be provided in the
documentation. (You should find a README file among the files you
uncompressed and unpacked.)

Winamp3 for /linux/?
I thought Winamp was Windows or Mac only...
Can you provde a link to the linux version of Winamp? I can't seem to find it on the winamp.com site..
Or are you trying to run Winamp3 for Windows under linux using WINE or Crossover?
Where did you get winamp.tgz?
I'm confused...

Winamp is closed source, and AFAIK, not included in any distro.

I tried Winamp3 for Linux a while back and the documentation was sparse and
generally not useful. There was no "install" and (like John) the binary did not
work.

non-existent!
xmms under Linux works pretty well for most of the things I used Winamp for
under Windoze. It is included in Red Hat Linux and probably most of the other
distros.
When Winamp3 was beta, there was a link off the download page to the linux
version. I don't see it anymore. They probably pulled it because it simply
didn't work.

Don't attempt to install it unless you know what you are doing.
Try and find somebody else who has packaged it, or who has installed
it and persuade them to package it for you.

Talk to the authors about it!

Then talk to the authors if you have some difficulty.

Well, asking them would tell you!
