To all the folks who replied:

Many thanks! I've heard that you folks are generally quick to
offer advice, and I've gotten some really good links and
information on various ways to solve this problem.

I'm going to take a little time to digest some of the responses
and do some homework at the various links you've provided, and
I'll try to post an update on how it all worked out.

Since the most popular consensus has been that buying an
inexpensive DSL router and NIC is the simplest answer, I'll try
that first. I have a list of distribution sites to visit, and
I'll try to pick equipment which is compatible with various
Linux distributions (RedHat, SuSe, Mandrake, and Debian all seem
to have excellent documentation and are popular, so I'll aim for
those four - with a little extra weight for RedHat.)

Thanks again, and see ya in a few days or weeks!

(I work as a theatrical stagehand - entirely too many hours, but
the pay is decent and the work is "entertaining". Free time for
the computer is in short supply at the moment.)

Take care, all -

Traynor.

PS: Followups set to alt.os.linux - for the sake of simplicity.
I can get all responses there, and address further questions
there as well, should I get into a jam.
