Author Repartition using linux install disks. Is it possible?

I have a 6GB disk on my laptop which is all on NTFS, partitioned into 2
logical drives. There are files on both drives.

Can I use the partition program that comes with the Linux install CD to
repartition the disk without losing data? I have about 2GB of free disk
space on the D: drive which I'd like to use for Linux.

What Linux image should I use?

Thanks in advance

I have seen no repartioning program yet which can handle resizing of NTFS
(at least no free one). I don't know if commercial tools like Partition Magic
can handle resizing of NTFS partitions.
The only other way is to back up the NTFS partition, reformat, install Linux,
reinstall Windows, create new NTFS partitions, and install the NTFS data back.

Partition Magic can do NTFS resizes and I would do it that way although it
involves a bit of outlay.

As for which Linux it is a matter of horses for courses. Red Hat is great
but not as easy for newbies as others. If you have not used Linux before I
would suggest Mandrake. It is very easy to configure and hardware
detection is great. I find SuSE a bit frustrating but it may just not work
on my machine.

After a few months and a bit of experimentation any new distro should be ok.
If you are just trying it out and are happy to use groups like this one to
get information try something like www.cheeplinux.com to buy downloaded
disks for about £10.

If you are not in the UK then do a search of your best search engine and
find something similar.

Good luck.

wait what os are you using is it xp or 2000, i know that in xp (should be
the same case for w2k) you can go to the taskbar setup and enable the
administrative tools option which you can use to partition and format your
drives, that way all you will need to do is 'delete' drive D: with the disk
management program and leave it as free space, then pop in a linux cd or
boot disk and install linux on that free space, since linux isn't going to
run on ntfs you will then simply create linux partitions (ext2 or ext3) and
linux swap on the new free space. no need for partition magic.
