Converting from Post.Office (NT) to Sendmail (Linux)

| I'm currently working on converting the ISP that I administer from being NT
based to a pure Linux shop. Currently I'm faced with converting the current
mail server over to Linux. Right now, they are running Post.Office, made by
the now nonexistent software.com. I'm not able to find a way to export any
data from Post.Office. I'm posting this message in hopes to find someone
that might have worked with Post.Office before and may have a few pointers
that they would be willing to share in regards to the project I'm currently
working on.

Bill Omer

I have no experience with the old Post Office software you refer to but
I do have lots of experience with sendmail and have recently underwent a
conversion of sendmail to qmail and vpopmail. I strongly recommend that
you use the qmail and vpopmail interface to simplify your administrative
duties and reduce your level of complexity at least tenfold. We have
lost nothing in our conversion and the ability to create virtual email
accounts has improved our client based management by a large factor over
sendmail.
Sorry I can't be of more use to you but hopefully following my advice
will save you lots of work in the future.

| I to would recommend qmail if you have the chance to choose. Sendmail is
old and rickety. Qmail is easier to configure, especially if you are new to
either qmail and sendmail. Qmail is secure, sendmail has had problems in
the past but is considered to be mature.
Qmail also supports maildir style mailboxes which eliminates the chance of
the users entire email becoming corrupt. Just one email could go bad.
Also, it can be used across nfs without lockfiles.
There's much more, go to qmail.org and let the author do all the bragging.
Have you considered your needs regarding pop? Do you currently use mbox o
