XMAME SuSE-friendly rpm's

| Hello all,
I used to play MAME games back in my Windoze days but I've never been able
to use xmame on Linux. I always have problems getting it to work. I'm
using SuSE 7.2 and I just downloaded the new rpms from x.mame.net. When I
try to run it I receive:
info: trying to parse: /usr/lib/games/xmame/xmamerc
info: trying to parse: /home/jose/.xmame/xmamerc
info: trying to parse: /usr/lib/games/xmame/xmame-x11rc
info: trying to parse: /home/jose/.xmame/xmame-x11rc
info: trying to parse: /usr/lib/games/xmame/rc/starwarsrc
info: trying to parse: /home/jose/.xmame/rc/starwarsrc
136021.208 NOT FOUND
136021.110 NOT FOUND
136021.111 NOT FOUND
136021.112 NOT FOUND
136021.113 NOT FOUND
ERROR: required files are missing, the game cannot be run.
Anyway... Are there any SuSE-friendly rpms? I could try compiling from
source but come on...shouldn't the rpm's work right out of the box? Please
help if you can.
Thanks in advance,
Jose

What RPMSs? For which system? For SuSE? Or for redhat?

Install them. Do you have a starwarsrc? What does the README say about
it?

IF those aren't for SuSE then they SHOULDN'T work! They are hardly
likely to be compatible at the binary level (though the fact that the
dependencies were OK - were they? - indicates that the binary linkage
should work. That only leaves you with configuration file placement
and directory structure differences ...)
> source but come on...shouldn't the rpm's work right out of the box? Please
Nope.

With what? Provide some data. Like the names of the rpms and the
ldd of the binary and the strace of the startup, and what the
docs say ...
7.1 Unix sources and docs
* The xmame/xmess sources
xmess-0.561.1 sources
xmame-0.60.1 sources
* xmame/xmess FAQ & Installation Guide:
xmame-doc (pdf format)
* xmame/xmess known bug list:
open issues
I'm afraid the source is 5MB and downloads at 1KB/s, so I can't help
you otherwise!

What about the version that comes with the SuSE 7.2?

I have some progs working, from redhat .rpm on SuSE, sadly there
was no source available...;-( They are running fine, however it's
hardware related, lowlevel stuff, only linked against 2 libs.

The version that comes with SuSe 7.2 works OK. The version with SuSe is
started with xmame.x11 xxxx where xxxx is the name of the ROM. The mame
ROMS have to be downloaded separately and placed in the /xmame/rom
directory. Your solution is to download the mame roms for the correct
version of mame that you have downloaded.

| Thanks for all the answers. BTW, sorry for the two posts...Knode crashed
while sending it...When I reopen it....it was still there on the outbox (so
I assumed it never went thru...then I sent it again).
Well...sorry for the lack of details. I went to the download section on the
Xmame site and I did download the rpm's there. I assume they are Red Hat
rpm's.
Anyway, I'm gonna try the xmame that comes with SuSE 7.2. I thought it was a
little outdated but I'm gonna try it.
Thanks,
José
