Hello,

I would like to setup a small home network that consists of two Linux
machines and one "Window$ XPensive" machine. I know I have to use Samba
for that XP machine, but I couldn't figure out how to network the linux
machines at first. I would like to have one of those machines as a DHCP
server. Can you give me some explanations on how to configure those two
linux machines, how to configure that DHCP server and how to have Samba
running?!

Thanks for your preciuos help..

I wish I could hold this one back:

/HOW-TO

www.google.com
www.yahoo.com

Knowledge is free, time is priceless, careful where you run up a tab =)

Think about what you are asking? Think about the fact that you never
told anyone exactly what version of Linux you are using? Is this a command
line thing? Maybe a gnome thing?

If you had never seen a gun, and on a desk there was a gun, and a
Manuel, which would you pick up first?

No offense so if you take any get off you dam horse and come play with
the peasants, where fun =)

YOU MISS SPELLED "PRECIUOS" (precious) www.dictionary.com

Why don't just slap me, or directly call me stupid?

Now I have to go though the group and oh look, "find" (kinda like a
local search engine if I had to define it) gives me this:

>I've been trying to get LimeWire installed on my RH 7.3 but I

couldn't, I
>have the j2re installed nd everything else should be considered as

fine.
>But when it gets to installing LimeWire, it gives me this message

Red hat has good documentation, and so many books it hurts. READ
THEM

Who am I to say all this?

After 48 hours 3 servers and 1 Mr. coffee machine (it broke
*sniff*) I don't care if I have no rep here!

And don't be feeling stupid, upset, angry, depressed, or anything
else. Except that you don't know what your doing, print this out, hang it
on the wall. Cause now you know. Your smarter. People make mistakes, and
then we help each other out. I'm just very, how do you say... Ruff around
the edges. Besides no one is laughing at you, just near you no?

Aight I'm out.

Like I said, we all make mistakes. However you somehow got around
spell check... and I haven't slept in days.

Please read http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

If running Mandrake and you loaded all the documentation
you can use locate to find documents to cut and past into your
browser. Example:

locate -i Samba | grep -i doc
/usr/share/doc/HOWTO/HTML/en/LDAP-Implementation-HOWTO/samba.html

locate -i network | grep -i doc
/usr/share/doc/HOWTO/HTML/en/mini/HOWTO/mini/Home-Network-mini-HOWTO.html

locate -i dhcp | grep -i doc
/usr/share/doc/HOWTO/HTML/en/mini/DHCP/index.html

If running Redhat, locate works, you may have to run
updatedb as root to build the database.

If nothing you might try

Manuel should be manual

no?

Ruff should be rough, Aight, I'm not sure on that one, maybe 'alright'? ;-)

You don't have to use Sambe unless
you want to see your Linux Filesystems
on Windoz ... ( Why bother ! ) .

Heres a simple hdcp conf file for a linux server
/etc/dhcpd.conf :

# dhcpd.conf
#
ddns-update-style ad-hoc;
subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
range dynamic-bootp 192.168.1.100 192.168.1.110;
option broadcast-address 192.168.1.255;
option routers 192.168.1.1;
filename "netboot";
}

Of course you have to install dhcpd rpm !

Where clients will get a address assigned between
the range of 100 to 110.

For such a small 3 box setup, I'd just use static addresses.
What Linux dist are you using

Whatever - they are your machines. dhcp is really for larger clusters
of machines in a lab or business,
or if your using etherboot ( diskless ) workstations
...

Well I need to share some files between the two OSs eventhough I don't
like to use Window$!.

Does DHCP rpm gets installed by default if you selected to install aa
server. I'm using Red Hat 7.3. Or should I look for a special rpm?.

Actually I'm trying to learn how to have a linux network that uses DHCP,
I know it is much better to use static addresses in small networks, but
I'm trying to learn how to do it using DHCP.
