Author RAID1 drive died now can't boot

I am trying to test out how to install Linux with 2 drives mirrored so that
if one drive dies the other will continue to work.

I have installed RdeHat 7.2 with three partitions on RAID 1

/ (2GB)
/home (3.5GB)
swap (256MB)

The system has 256MB RAM more than enough as it will only be acting as a
file server and email server for 15 Windoze systems.

When I remove the first hard drive the system will not boot (just gets the
'LI' bit).

I am trying to make sure that I do not need a boot disk.

Can any one shed some light on this please.

What HDD's - IDE / SCSI ?
Please post Your /etc/lilo.conf, /proc/mdstat, /etc/fstab and also
configuration file for RAID in /etc, something like /etc/md****
